I didn't see anyone mention this, but get a propane torch and heat it up, then use a really long flathead screwdriver, put the tip on the rolled edge of the filter near the motor, and tap/hit the screwdriver with a hammer, the goal being to turn the filter.

In my experience this is 100% effective.

Oh, if the bike runs now, you can start it and get it hot. If you do this though, just get the filter a little loose, then wait for it to be cold before spinning off the filter and draining the oil. Oil fires are no fun (not likely, but why screw around, eh?).

MAL,

Those vice-grips on steroids look perfect. Where do I get me some? I had a few more options in mind, similar to diet DR.'s post, an easy out, and last on my list was a big pipe wrench.

Hopefully I will get some time this weekend. You would think I was taking apart the motor with all this trouble, this is CRAZY!!!!!

Get them at auto parts stores or home depot (most likely). The filter isn't coming off because the P.O. probably cross-threaded it

Have had the same problem many times and had to use all the methods suggested in this thread at one time or another.

Indy is right - to avoid this, oil the seal on the filter before installation. Do not install it dry and do not overtorque.

If you really want to get fancy, use a silicone paste to lube the seal instead of oil, like spark plug wire lube or Dow Corning DC33. These won't bake solid like oil can under extreme heat.

:icon_ditto: I'm with Trout and Malbojah. I have always used the cap wrench. All three of my bikes have the same filter size which is a bonus. Given the minimum amount of room that there is to unscrew these things use the cap wrench and a socket drive extension and you'll have it off in no time. Driving screwdrivers through things will work but in the end you will damage something that will cost a whole lot more than the cap wrench.
