One cheap place is found to get oil here in WA (I dont see why it cant work in any other state) is to buy my oil direct from the State Distributor. They dont have a retial outlet as such, but all I do is rock up to the office with the exact $$$ and pickup my oil from the warehouse.

Mobil 1 Synthetic for bikes is normall at least $70 from bike shop for 4L. BI buy mine for $47!!

If you have the $$$ you can also buy 20L drums of oil direct from any distributor, or if you are reall cashed up you can save even more $$$ by buying a 200L drum.

What kind of Valvoline do you use now ? Hard to say if it is OK without more precise information.

What oil you use is not anywhere near as important as how often you change it.

At long as you change it at least every 5000k than any oil is fine.

My bike spends a lot of its life over 7000 rpm so I use a Synthetic so the viscosity wont brake down so readily.

I use a full synthetic 15/40, i.e. without VI improvers. No improvers to brake down then. It's a relatively cheap one, but meets all current top standards. I'll change the oil and the filter every 6000 km instead of 12000 km as stated in the manual. I've noticed that the shifts gets much smother when the oil is changed.

Edit: I havn't driven the CBR more than about 3000 km's yet because I also use another bike. Experience from rough shifting comes from the GSX R. When the oil is new, it shift gears like silk, extremly smooth. The harsh shifts seems to come gradually, I'm not aware of them until i change the oil after another 6000 km, and so on.

That should be great as long as you dont have any clutch slip. API SJ includes low-friction improvers to save fuel, which is not recommended for wet clutches. But for the costly and vital parsts of the engine, it is totally fine.
