Default No Fan

Sorry if this has been done to death, but thought I'd post my symptoms in case anyone can suggest a quick fix.
1990 CBR1000F. Riding home tonight in traffic, noticed temp gauge almost in red. Never done this before.
Stopped, listened, no fan noise (ignition on!).
Also noticed steam coming out of one of the breathers down below.
Managed to get home by letting her cool every few minutes, then riding at 50mph when I got to the A3. Temperature stayed about 80%.
If I connect a wire direct from battery +ve to the fan motor wire should it start the fan (ignition on?)? Or should I connect -ve? (I've seen somewhere it's an earth switch?).
Thanks folks.

Sprock,

Thanks for that, spot on. Just been and checked, fan powered up as soon as I earthed it. So I presume it's the switch coming from the radiator that's died.

I understand the thermostat is not related to this so hopefully that's OK. Do I need to check the coolant level in the rad or in the expansion bottle?

Looks like another visit to Maplin - a few weeks ago I got a pushbutton to replace the starter switch that's not working any more.

right not the thermostat but the thermo fan switch in the rad - online about 12 bucks us
uk maybe 2 quid

or just install a manual rocker switch somewhere ---> ground to turn it on when you are in traffic - I run my 93 this way as I mostly use that for highway riding and never
gets to heat up - but if I get caught in traffic - hey just hit the switch

My bikes just work like they're supposed to.

Might be worth posting them up in the 'Alternative Parts' Mark?

Maybe Steve but I usually reserve that for tried and tested by experience
have not vetted these yet - but winter is here - pissing rain again
so maybe I'll get to actually get this done soon enough

Ah Mark,

The autumn rains dampen the joys of summer.

The winter projects beckon and the dreams for next year begin.
