Hello all,

New to the forum but been riding CBR's of various sizes for 20 years!

Now on a '95 CBR 1000F and loving it.

In Australia for 8 years after 30 + in Scotland so at least I have the weather to ride in every day - no snow on the Gold Coast!!

Just picked up the CBR 1000 F with 60,000 kms on it for $5000 AUD after trading in my VT1100. Its has had a full spray (black and grey), new screen, tyres and chain and has no cam chain rattles.

Anybody have problems with the back wheel spinning up? Even upright, my RPM gets to 8000 and then the back tyre breaks traction - now, I am not yanking at the throttle, just rolling it on gently and at 8000 I start leaving darkies on the tarmac. This happens in 1st - 4th gear. Rear tyre is a Battleaxe BT020. Its can be fun on the upright bits but my wife gets nervous when it spins up coming out of corners.

I am REALLY gentle on the throttle exiting corners but when you hit the 7000 mark she lets go and spins up - the tyre, not the wife!

Any ideas?????

Hi kevlan - welcome to the forum :-)

Sounds to me like you have a mighty brave wife - and that you have a lively CBR1000F.

Here's my advice - back off the throttle a bit! I think 7K is when the 2nd wind kicks in and things start to happen quickly, so that's on the money. I'm kinda surprised it does that when you are 2 up, which makes me think your engine is in very good shape.

Och the Noo!

Hi and Welcome!

It sounds really strange that the rear spins on 2nd to 4th. Even on 1st gear the front should lift on straights before the tyre spins if the grip is good. In case it spins on higher gears on straights, I can only imagine this happens on wet, dirty or cold roads. The BT020 is not the grippiest tyre in the world, but still, it should never spin on higher gears on dry tarmac, especially if you have a pillon. In case it spins out of corners on 2nd and up, it could be caused by a flattened tyre where the side profile is degraded. I bad rear shock will also contribute to bad grip if the roads are raw. Stand behind the bike and press down the rear as deep as you can, release the pressure and check how the rear returns up. It should return in a soft way and not overshoot or oscillate on top. The spring pressure is also important, check that the rear goes down about 40 mm's when you sit on it, relative fully extended rear.

Hi and Welcome Kevlan!

R1000, how and where you measure the 40mm?

Hi guys and thanx for the warm welcome.

Re. The rear spinning up:

Only had a few outings on the bike but I am a mechanical nut with good skills - engine rebuilds are no prob - and have ridden off road for years too so I have suspension setup pretty spot on.

1st spin up was on a tristy but well surfaced road with air temp about 30 C (90's F) and she lit up the rear coming out of a right hand 90 deg corner in 2nd gear, 1/4 throttle roll on.
2nd spin up - leaving the lights from standing start with air temp mid 30's C, hit 7000 in 1st and spun up, changed to second and rolled on the throttle - spun up at 7500, changed to third and rolled on to about 1/2 throttle with the back wheel breaking traction at 8000. Did it again in 4th but was OK in 5th and 6th.

Yes, I was having a go at a VFR 800 and a load of tin tops at the time (its a 5 lane section of highway).

Rear tyre is a BT 020 with only nominal wear - 5mm of good tread across 95% of tire face. No shine or "blueing" of the rubber.

Rear was initially a little "harsh" but dialled this out with a bit of rebound damping and a slight increase in pre-load.

I actually thought that the straight line spin up was clutch slip until I felt her start to slide sideways in 2nd !!! :-O

Now, I have to add that the engine pulls like a train. Its a hell of a lot more powerful in feel than my GSXR 750 and at 8000 rpm it seems to assume "warp speed" capability! I have had my share of big sports bikes and the closest thing I have felt in power to this was my Blade. Sure, the blade was sharper but I don't recall it being all that much better in the "warp drive" stakes!!

As far as I can tell, the motor is stock and has no modifications.

Maybe the ambient temp is too high for the BT020's (average riding done in low of 20 C with high of 30+C). Mate of mine with a 96 CBR1000F said he found them really terrible on his bike and replaced them with Dragons early in the piece becasue the BT 020 on the rear wouldn't grip.

Oh, on a slightly seperate note, My best mate has a 2001 VFR800 which, for some unknown reason, wont go past 200 kph in any gear! - no obvious speed limiter but I was wondering if it could be a jap home market model. Doesn't matter what gear he is in or what rpm, it just wont break 200 kph. Weird or what?!?!

If it "spins" on dry and clean tarmac on 2nd and up it is clutch slipping.

I don“t think clutch slip will cause the rear to slide sideways, or am I wrong? I think you have a ****ty rear tire, you said in start post that there was a new tire on, but a tire is only as new as the DOT-mark says. Several thing can cause hardening of the rubber, such as wrong storage, age, heat... But I have to say that it sounds strange that it spins even on 4th gear. Maybe you have a Scottoiler that pukes out oil on the chain?
