New Owner Here
Hey guys, I just picked up a 1988 CBR 1000F Hurricane today. It's basically a POS right now. But here's the thing. I'm in Motorcycle Mechanics Institute right now. I'm trying to figure out whether to part out the bike or to fix it up.
Anyway, I won't bore you guys with that dilemna, but here ya go!
Basically right now it doesn't have half of it's plastics, it doesn't run, it's been sitting for a year, and it needs a bit of work done to it... But you can't argue with a motor that'll turn over and operable brakes and wheels for 100 bucks!
Ah well, it'll be a good learning project, or if i get tired of it, parts bike!

Alright, brief overview...
Yellowish ants living somewhere in it.
Broken airbox
Missing all plastics/exterior pieces rear of the pegs
Internally rusted gas tank
Forks shot
Shock shot
Ignition missing (new ignition wired in)
No fork lock
Seat needs to be recovered
Aftermarket (crappy looking) brakelight, turn signals (front/rear) installed
Left front brake doesn't work, but right one does, as does rear
Tires dry rotted
Anybody have any advice?

Welcome to the Forum !
1 FIX IT - it's worth the effort, and for 100 bucks, what a bargain.......
I have some 88 spares, starter motor, clutch actuator, alternator cover, oil pump, front forks, tail light etc, price ? ...postage only but will be quite expensive as I'm in South Africa.......no plastics but they are plentiful on e-Bay UK and e-Bay US. I'm sure the boys will "chip" in with advice , rude remarks etc, but it's all in good spirit... Recovering the seat is easy, take about two hours, all you need is good marine vynil , a staple gun, and some patience.
If you need a manual, download it from

Enjoy, and take your time...it's worth the effort.

Awesome, thanks for the response and the offer, but you're right, the shipping would be murder!
Anywho, I think I'll take your advice and just work on it a little at a time until I have a daily commuter to school and back (20 miles a day).
Out of curiosity, what do you guys usually get for gas mileage on these? I found a site claiming as little as 25 MPG, but another site claiming as much as 58 MPG. Granted it depends on how you ride, but not that much!
(BTW, a Suzuki Volusia is perported to give anywhere from 50-65 MPG depending on the rider, I got 42 on average... Stupid lead wrist implants! Lol)

My bike (1990, 1000F 39000 miles) still regularly gives me 45-50 MPG, depending how hard I hang on the cable. Last week at a steady 80MPH, I got over 50, but it was an exception. I did 450 miles that day, no back problems, just a slightly "numb bum" he he...and some hand cramps, but I wore the wrong gloves for long distance. Did you download the manual ?
Yep, got it, thanks! I have a friend who found a site with 10 gigs worth of .pdf Service manuals and this was not one of them! (Took him approx 4 months to download on a Cable connection). As for the bike, if I can get a salvage title and get it registered, I've decided I'm going to make it a streetfighter. I think it'd look mean with the right combination of blacking it out and shining up other parts!

Mate, that bike's got 2 words written all over it - Money Pit! If you could by another one for 100 bucks with all the opposite good and bad bits then you'd be on a winner.
For some unfathomable reason the 87-88 models of these are undervalued in the market and you can pick up a nearly pristine unit for 2000 bucks. All this for a bike that was the fastest production bike ever built for its day. The ZZR1100 changed that a year later.
However, if you were going to go down a radical custom route then that would be a interesting project.

Yeah, I started to dig into it today, the last owner really screwed it up good! Truck radiator hoses as airbox connectors. Fire ant eggs in the air filter (burned rather nicely). Broken coolant bottle and all brittle hoses. Dented and bondo'd gas tank. Just about everything wrong with it. I will however be able to sell off the carbs, motor, frame, radiator, rearsets, and wheels...
Carbs are decent, kinda gummed up right now, but I can fix that pretty easily.
Motor cranks, not sure if it'll fire or not, haven't checked spark.
Radiator has a little spray paint on it (blue in case you're wondering) but nothing to stop it's function
Frame has silver and blue paint on it, but looks to be in good condition (not scratched or anything so it hasn't been laid down too hard if it has)
Rearsets (spray painted silver)
Wheels both stock, will come with brake rotors and the old sprocket too (stock size, needs to be replaced)
If anyone is interested, feel free to respond! If not I'll just sell parts locally.
BTW, I'm in Phoenix, AZ.

PS Or if you wanna trade it for a running bike I'm always open to offers! lol

Yeah sorry dude, but that's just a parts bike. If the 87/88 model year is what you like (the nicest in my opinion
, you can find a decent one relatively cheap. Good luck, hope to see ya on the forum in the future.
