Default New owner......cheeks ache from the grin factor!

Firstly - great forum guys! Read up on loads before i made the plunge and bought an 87 CBR 1000f Hurricane.
I have a few q's tho - I'm from th UK and the bike is an "import" - speedo is in Kph and thats probably one of the first things i need to look at changing if i want to keep my licence - any advice appreciated.
Also, the colour scheme on it is foxing me a little as i've not seen another one like it, but am assured thats its all original?? It's mainly dark grey in colour (Karakorum Grey metallic) and the tank and inner dash cowls are silver - is this a scheme seen in the US?
I'll need to change the rear wheel bearings and get the front wheel balanced, but apart from that the machine rockets - and soooo smooth (although coming from a v-twin Yam i guess anything would be an improvement!)
Oh one last thing - i did own a 97 CBR1000 (FV?) for a while a few years back, but it was too big for me having not long passsed my bike test. Maybe its me, but the FH seems like its way more powerful than the later model - was the later one restricted possibly??

Cheers all, looking forward to any advice received.
Ad.

You could mount a smallbicycle computer where km/h or mph readingis selectable. I'm using a Sigma BC1200 unit that has a lot of functions (recorded top speed etc.)and reads very correct when calibrated. It reads up to 300 km/h or the corresponding value in mph. The calibration is done by rolling the bike one tyre turn an measure the distance on the floor and type in the value as measuredin millimeter. If that is done within 5 mm, which is very easy to do, the reading will be correct within 0.3 %, that is about1 km/h error at 300 km/h or 0.3 km/h at 100 km/h.

As to your color scheme question, since your speedo is in kph, it is not a US model so don't ask us yanks. As to the power differences between your 87 and your earlier 97 model, generally speaking, I don't think that there should be much difference between the two, although the 87 may be a little faster becauseit is somewhat lighter. However, I have read on this forum that some of the Euro models were restricted to 100 hp, but I'm unsure what years or models this applies to. It's also possible that when you had your 97, that as a newbie, maybe you were reluctant to explore the bikes power band, above 6,000 RPM or so, and now that you're more experienced, you'll venture into that territory, so it just seems faster. I find that my bike gains about 10 horses everytime I wear earplugs versus no earplugs. Obviously this is not literally true, but since I almost always shift by sound (rarely by the tach) wearing earplugs has me holding off on my shifts and thus moving further up in the power band, and the bike just seems so much faster.

Thanks Paco - nice theory!! Probably right too! (although i can remember the needle hitting 260 kph on the first bike so i pretty much gave it some stick!).
Be interesting to find anymore info on the full power query.

Cheers
Adz.

I remember reading somewhere a brochure on the 87/88 models they had three colour schemes, white/red, black/red(same as mine) and gunmetal grey/silver.It was off the internetso it could have been anywhere.I haven't seen a silver one in Australia. I also remember reading the top speed was 158mph. 90 and later models listed at 153mph.
As soon as I rode the CBR, I was so amazed for such an old bike how smooth and mind blowing powerful it was. For a 1000cc bike it would have more grunt thanmost 1100 and 1200's. To top it off it has a great note even with the standard pipes.

I does make a nice noise!!! Do you still have the standard pipes? After market pipes make it sound better and makes it just that Little faster!

The grin is starting to fade!!! Not through any fault of the bike - its the crap weather in uk weve had for the past 2 weeks! There's only so much tinkering that can be done, cleaned, sdjusted, lubricated and polished everything.....twice!
Still, this weekend is forecast to be good so I'll be out.

I've found a brochure ref the colour schemes - there were 4 optiions -red/white blue/white black and the one i have, gunmetal grey/silver. I'm doubting whether mine is a real "Hurricane" though - it has no Hurricane decal on the tank as they all seem to have, but it does have them on the fairings - possbily a retro fit? I'll up a pic this weekend.
Either way, its a great bike and i'm itching to get the thing rode.
Cheers

Hi Mate,

Have a look here: http://cbr1000.racing.gs/html/cbr1000/cbr1000s.html

Gives the colour schemes for European models, also the reason that your bike doesn't say Hurricane on it is probably because it's European, from what I can gather it's only the American ones that were called Hurricane, ours are just given the CBR1000 name.

Cheers,

Rob
