Default New Mirrors

Is there a trick to getting the rubber to stay where it is supposed to on these mirrors. My old ones never completely covered the mounting bracket and I thought they were just old and had shrunk a bit. I replaced my mirrors due to one getting smoked by a bird and now I am having trouble getting the rubber boot cover to stay where it is supposed to.

Is there a way of getting the boots on and staying on?

Mine stay on most of the time but sometimes pop off hang just clear of the metal piece that they're supposed to grip. Been that way since it was new.

Push the mirror arm forward as far as it will go, then hook the rubber cover over the front part of the metal plate, put the mirror in the normal position and fit it over the rear of the metal plate.

That's how I do it and they stay in place.

I have tried that with no luck. It is just a crappy design I get the bottom on and then the rubber doesn't fit around the ball where it swivels by the mirror. Same way as the ones that were on the bike.
