Default New guy post 93 1000f

I introduced myself in the main forum and they said I should post up here. My wife and I picked up out hurricane in decent shape but its kind of a barn find. Its been parked in a barn for years with a blown motor (connecting rod thru block) We recently found a block for it and hoping to find someone to give us a hand putting it in. This is my first bike, I have limited experience from working on cars, mostly my 240sx and z31 300zx. The bike has a Vance and Hines 4-2-1 exhaust, Corbin saddle, and K&N intake. We do not really plan any other mods, just get it running replace seals and bearing and have fun.

Welcome to the CBR1000F 'inner sanctum' mrniceguy,

Rather than rebuild the block into a going motor - as there is a chance if it put a rod through the block there could be valve/head damage as well - just seek out a low mileage replacement motor?

Worth a thought.

actually already buying the motor. its complete and running from a bike with 12k.

Well by complete, I will still have to use my carbs and some other parts but its a complete long block supposedly in running shape.

As Seb suggested, the simplest way around your problem is to just fit the new motor.

What year is the new motor from, the same as yours? If it's an earlier (MK1) model you'll need the pulse generator from your current motor, if it's the later (MK2) motor you'll need the later carbs.

Any help needed the guy's on here really know their stuff.

Looking at your bike again it looks like the later MK3 bike so it will be a straight swap Shouldn't take too long at all.

Will be my first time working on a motorcycle. I have the Haynes manual for it, and I will check for the factory service manual. Any good tips and tricks for pulling the motor? so far I have only removed the fairing and seat to visually inspect the frame and see if anything was missing.

Suggestion on removing and refitting the motor...get someone else to do it while you crack a cold one

It's not a nice job, the motor drops down, but not straight. It's a jiggling process to get the gearbox to clear the lower section of the frame. You basically lower the front of the motor while lifting the rear. Then jiggle and curse till it clears. Then gently put it down so as not to crack the sump. Fitting the replacement means getting the gearbox up first then lifting the front. You need to play with the angles a bit to find the sweet spot. I've seen the swop done on this forum by propping the motor on a crate or similar and using a hoist to lift the bike over it. Looks easier but not having done it myself I can't comment. Still think its easier to crack a beer and watch someone else do it

The Haynes manual is a great place to start, the factory manual can be downloaded from here :-

Main advice is start soaking the header studs and nuts in WD40 or similar now and keep soaking them for as long as you can! If they haven't been removed recently, go very gently and use some heat to loosen them up. I think Honda had them specially manufactured from butter, just to pi55 everyone off

Removing the engine bolts is easy, make sure to support the engine with a jack first, but when re-fitting, don't over-tighten the bolts, the mounts into the engine cases can also be broken.

Just make sure everything is disconnected as in the Haynes manual and you'll be fine, probably a days work the first time you do it.
