Default New Engine question

I was lucky enough to find a brand new zero mileage unused engine for my 1990 CBR1000F. It been fitted and it's fantastic. It's like having a new bike! One things ruining my enjoyment. There are two unthreaded holes going into the sides of the cylinder head on either side. They are about 1/4 inch wide and an inch deep. Looking into them there's something there but nothing moving with the engine started. Is this normal? Should they be plugged up and what are they for? The engine apparently came from a Honda training facility in France. Thanks for any replies.

Could be for fitting the Munster bolts:

But seriously, I have no idea. Buying a new 30 year old engine, however, is incredible!

Cheers

I am betting money, that those 2 holes are for water to exit out of the spark plug area.
Take the spark plug cable out and spray compressed air or parts brake cleaner in the well, and it will exit through those 2 side holes. Get ready to see some dirt, grime, dead spiders or bugs.

Yes, that’s exactly what they are. I phoned the mechanic that fitted the engine and he put my mind at rest! No dirt or grime on this engine though. It’s brand new.
