Personally as a bit of a 1000F enthusiast , I do not think the Bird have the same appeal as the classic models ... I do believe that the Birds are a ripper ride , but lack something from my point of view ....
The really late editions of the 1000F's are sweet and would be my choice for an upgrade if I ever lost my mind ( not a hard thing to loose for me these days I might add lolol ) and decided to sell my favorit bike of 35+years , the 1000F
good luck and I know that after we get through performing the standard crucifixion of you if you do sell your baby? , that you will be happy anyway which ever way you go ...

Hey:
If you do it, get a 1999 as its the best year, don't settle for any other.
I ride one every now and then and its faster/quicker, but not more comfortable.
I would buy a Busa before owning a Bird as they can be found at better prices and are a better bike overall. The zx14/C14 are better than either but not to cheap to find. To me its not that big of an upgrade to go to a Bird but the Busa/zx14 is, but not worth the extra cost. My last 3 new bikes were a 98XX, 01RC51, and a 04RR, prior to going back to another Cane a 95. And I still ride my modded 88 more than my other bikes except my 80 CBX if that means anything to you.

I'll always be a fan of the 1000F, but there are some fine bikes out there, notably the 'Busa and Blackbird and dare I say it the K1200S and ZZR1200
I would always want to keep my 1000F and buy another bike if space/finances permit.
And yes, agree with Steve - once the crucifixion is done we'll still talk to you no matter what your decision........ HERETIC UNBELIEVER
Wasn't the 99 Bird a carb model ? Not as comfy IMO as a 1000F Mk2 - can't speak about a Mk1 as I've never had one.

Hey:
Most HP, Best FI map, no carbs, but still the fastest year, after this 2000+, HP went down and has a diff stock FI map. 97/98 carbs only. All else the same for most years, 97 and 03+ had some things unique to them only. 99 has no odd stuff about it, and has FI thats why.
Also Carl it depends on your size if your taller 6+ and heavier you may want to look elsewhere than a Bird. Try to take one for a long ride if you can before you sell the Cane and lay down the cash on a Bird to see how it fits. If your not you will probably love it.
@ Shadow no 99 is 1st year of PGM FI.
here is a list from Honda of the 99 upgrades and remember them well as I had a 98
1999 Major update. PGM FI fuel injection system is introduced.
Ram-air system is introduced. It provides engine with more air at high speeds (above 200 km/h/120 mph) utilizing aerodynamic pressure, thus raising power output to a claimed 164 hp (122 kW) at 9,500 rpm (at the crank).
Revised linked brakes with altered proportioning between front and rear.
Fuel tank capacity is increased from 22 to 24 liters.
The choke lever is removed from the left side switch assembly as it is no longer necessary.
To accommodate the ram air tubes, the oil cooler becomes lower and wider.
The inner and outer fork bushings are wider, changing the fork lowers and sliders.
The sidestand warning light on the instrument cluster becomes the FI warning light.
The wide part of the front axle (left side) becomes 10 mm longer, which makes the left-front axle space 10 mm shorter.
The two bulbs in the tail light are vertically aligned, in previous years they were side by side.
Front wheel hub is enlarged, the brake rotors are changed.
The ignition switch is changed, and the keys are longer.
The rotor carriers, stator cover and clutch cover are a light titanium color.
The number of clutch plates is reduced from nine to seven.
The rear inner fender changes shape to accommodate additional electronics.
Manufacturer's power and torque figures are 164 hp (122.3 Kw) and 91.5 ft-lbs (124 Nm)

It just seems to me that if it's a trivial difference, I wouldn't limit myself to just the '99.
I suppose a power commander could be added to any of the FI ones so you could do whatever with the mapping.
