Default Mystery Part

I finally got around to having a local shop install the new chain and sprockets that had been taking up space in my closet. She ran great and no more chain noise. A few days later I found something that may or may not be a bike part on the ground. It has some numbers on it and is dirty enough to be a bike part but I couldn't find it in the parts list. Anyone recognize it? Is my chain going to come flying off and amputate my leg if this part isn't installed? Thanks in advance.

That, Demon is most impressive; I just hope that Shawn has a Merc that he can trace it to.

We know he has a very rusty VW, was that your clue?

Personally; I was thinking - cable tension adjuster from a Boeing 777. But that was just a wild guess.

don't know about merc's, but i call it a blind adjuster.

a "J" shaped bar with threads clamps something in the slot.
there are tightening marks of a washer on the underside.

this is it in my head https://www.dropbox.com/s/q2gadjs5wefwgt8/ban1.JPG

might help the merc boys zero in.

i don;t work on rusty scrap
ps,,, there is something very similar on a truck , slack adjuster mechanism. you have to push it in to adjust the brake slack.

I thought it was part of a dump valve for the Russian space station.
Or like Teeks said.

So CTE it looks like the bike won't be falling to bits.....?

The bad news is, if you own a Merc, your transmission is wrecked

I've been servicing and repairing cars professionally for over 25 years. During that time, I've taken those things on and off hundreds of times!
