Given this picture, have I just discovered that my bike is a parts bike now?

Nah, it's the clutch cover and can be replaced with a new one from Ron Ayres for $150, and a lot cheaper if you can find a used one on ebay.

Is that hole from something outside puncturing the cover, or something inside exploding?

Looks like a puncture not a part exploding through - just my 2 cents.

Looks to me like a puncture from the outside in as well. I have an 87, and rife with problems.

some jackass puntured your clutch cover, people suck. Hope you got home soon enough with a bit of oil left in the case to keep the engine ok. Good luck man....
