Default ignition advance

My 1990 feels sluggish below 4K, so I grabbed my old timing light and checked the timing advance. It's on "F" at idle, but stays there until around 4K then advances to the advance line. I don't think this is normal. I think it should be advancing somewhat between idle and 4K. Has anyone checked their timing with a light? Does it advance smoothly or jump at 4K? Do I need a new spark generator?

The ignition pulse should come like 5 or 10 degrees (BTDC) at 1000 rpm and smoothly increase to about 40 degrees advance at 5000 rpm (or higher rpm depending on version). The spark generator is fixed, and the variable advance function is within the ECU.

They don't call it snail mail for no reason. Plus, Colorado is in the middle of the country. I'm driving my wife crazy, because every time I come home I ask about the mail or go look myself. I will let you know when it comes. Actually, I'll put it on the bike first, test ride it, then let you know that it came.

To bad for you, hope it has not been ranked as a dangerous ignition device and destroyed []

You probably already did this, but have you tried Steel's for the ignition part? They have surprised me many times with parts for my 87 over the years.

Steels, Denver's motorcycle boneyard. We went there to get a regulator for my friend's 1978 Suzuki GS1000. It uses a separate regulator and rectifier, both with huge cooling fins. Couldn't find any. So we got a combination R/R from a Yamaha and just hooked up the regulator wires. All R/R's are pretty much the same, but now he has a spare rectifier he can hook up if he has to.
