To be fair I think we all need to back up the truck here a little; lets start with a little more info from D'Clift before we start guessing.
The model year is important because as has been alluded to above :
Mk 1's have fuel pumps, but not side stand switches,
Mk's 2 & 3 don't have fuel pumps but do have side stand switches .... etc.
Choke is obviously an issue, fix that and report back.
A little more info D'Clift will give you a whole lot more targeted and helpful suggestions.
Cheers

D'Clift is obviously overwhelmed here and we've done too much trying to help. We should elect a spokesman and then place bets on who's right.
@ D'clift. Give us the background on the bike and choose a repair guru. Follow their every word to the letter and you'll be back on the road in no time.

more background info. It's easy to get confused with all thinkable reasons it can be.

there's no petcock diaphragm vacuum lock on a mark 1 petcock TBT
- it's a simple tap design ! twist and flow
Which also means "always" shut it off or you could end up with an oil pan
full of gas ! ask me how I know this & I just put a new petcock assembly
in my 87 complete with inner tank filter/strainer. ...... so it's Gospel !
If you don't want the expense of new controls or whatever just run a wire
out to the side fairing vents and use it to actuate the choke rod that pulls
all four choke plungers !
Again it will not start without choke - ever - unless already warmed up of course

Good to hear that I'm not the only fool to drain his gas tank into his crankcase.
