Default Houston.... I have a problem (electrical)

Inmates,

If you stand in front of the bike, the right hand side, underneath the seat cowel, there is a electrical conector bolted to the frame with a green earth wire bolted on. Everyone up with me so far?

I pulled it apart to clean with Wd40 only to find one of the wires looked burnt with a little melted plastic, straight away i thought this can't be right, and then i thought sh*it i am quick, nothing gets past me.

What does this do and how do i go about fixing it.
Everything on the bike works so there must be some current getting through.

By the way the the electrical "block" looked clean, just the connector side

Thanks

Aussie Johnno

Sounds like you're talking about the wiring to the Reg/Rec (regulator/rectifier).

As probaly the third owner, the bike could have been anywhere even to the very popular "tiger woods' LOL.

It looks to me at some point is has shorted, can you pull apart the connectors?

Yeah, you can pull the connector and take a look at it.
My guess is that it's trying to push too hard on a questionable battery or just generally running hot (as they do).... maybe on it's way out. The Reg/Rec is a known weak point on these bikes anyway. If you decide to get a new one, I would look into an aftermarket one with a bigger heat sink.

I have found it impossible so far to find an aftermarket Reg/Rec here in Aussie.

Well, that sucks. I can see an aftermarket direct replacement being a pain to find, but you should be able to find a suitable replacement that you could just wire in.
I can certainly understand not wanting to do that, though. I know there are other models that are direct swap... like CBs, but I think there are actually ones for other makes that will swap, too. (I just can't remember exactly which ones)
I think the 87/88 ones are different than the newer ones, though. Like Indys is different than mine. His is the all aluminum looking one whereas mine is all black (and I'm pretty sure they have different connectors, too).

That's funny. Good stuff. Keep it coming.

Sure looks dirty under that seat. Get to work. It's winter. Nothing else to do.
