Unfortunately, you'll have to do a tear down - we've been puzzling over ways to do a new chain without splitting the motor, but unless someone can come up with a primary chain that has a split link in it, that's what has to be done. My chain is rattling now, after 90K so it won't be long for me either. Sounds like your tensioner broke and fell off too - lucky no other damage............. You have to do the motor to fit a new tensioner - no way round that one.
There is a full breakdown on how to do the job - Martin can help there. Painful but true. Sorry.

Yeah, as a rule you are generally not in a very good place when you have chunky bits like that in the oil pan. On a postive note thou' clearly the oil filter is still working correctly.

Wow , that's a revelation ! ( been away deer hunting for a few days )
Ya think the tensioner broke off and jammed up breaking the
chain ..... I wonder .... oh well..... if ya lived near me I'd buy the bike and drop the
motor and go at it ! or if after opening it up it was a bigger issue then just find a
good used motor to bolt up in it's place ..... just me though..... just saying.

Really sorry to hear the news skidstar! But like Sprock said .... If it was me, I'd try and find another motor to drop in, rather than parting it out.

Good Luck in whatever you decide fella!

As the other guy's have already said, drop another motor in there, that way at least you have the bike you wanted.

It may take ages to get rid of all the spares, get a new motor you could be riding it in a week!

Then sell the old engine to get some of your cash back

I hear ya , have to do what you have to do, but most of us here go the extra mile to
save them and in the end they are worth the effort imo. ....

I like most of us here understand your pain. At the end of the day you have to do what's for you. If you sell try to sell as one complete unit to an enthusiast but don't be too hasty. It's not that hard to pull these old girls down. Done mine several times with a third coming up soon for a noisy gearbox bearing. That's one of the beauties of these lovely ladies. You can do it yourself & once she's going again you can say "I did that" with a bl..dy great smile on your dial.
