Default Help needed.

Hello everyone!

This is my first post but I need a little help locating some parts.

Last time I had a bike was 15 years ago and it was an ’87 Hurricane 1000, few weeks ago ran across an exceptional condition ’87 1000 that had a damaged cylinder. I’m mechanically very inclined and have worked on both, bikes and cars since ’90. Always have at least one car that I work on and then when it’s fixed, I sell it. However considering the condition of the Hurricane and the fact that I wanted to get one for a while, this one is a keeper.

Here’s the scoop on the engine. The previous owner took really good car of it but one day, one of the valves broken and dropped down. This pretty much destroyed the piston and the head, the cylinder is nearly intact (very small mark that can be honed out). His mechanic took the top end of the engine apart and this is when he realized that for him to fix it, it would cost too much. So I bought the bike with the engine half disassembled. I have no problem putting it back together but coulduse a repair manual just to make sure I don’t miss something. Does anyone have a scanned copy of the repair manual for the 1000 Hurricane? I’ve searched here and on the net but couldn’t find anything.

The next thing I’m after is a good used top end (pistons, head and maybe cylinders) OR a complete used good condition engine. If there is anyone parting one out, please PM me.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I’ll try to attach a couple of pics of the bike.

The VIN indicated that this is the 253rd bike that was made in '87. So I'll take itit's a very early example.

Sorry for the missing location information. I have filled out the field on the registration form but it's not showing up. I'm in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada.

I agree that if it didn't break, the owner would have never sold it. He had another Hurricane 600, and enduro Honda and a '00 Hayabusa. Unfortunatly he didn't know how to work on them and everything was done by a mechanic. Even if I have to buy another used engine, I think $750 was a very good price. It will also need a rear tire and maybe pads. Other than that, it's good to go.

Yup, you ar eright. The possibility of a con rod damage is what pushing me towards replacing the entire engine. However I will have a realy close look over the winter before decidign what to do. Unless I can locate a resonably priced/mileage engine, I'll check out the one that's in the bike.
Personally I would prefer to replace the entire engine as that's what I usually do with cars. There are too many unknowns that might surface once a repalcement topend is installed. Also it would be much simpler and less timeconsuming to do an entireengine swap. The only porblem is that, in Ontario, there is only one salvage yard that has two engines available and one of them is not good either....so the local availability is vey limited.
