Default Help with my new (old) baby

Hi all,

I have just pick up a 1992 cbr1000f of ebay in australia, have always wanted one of these.
I took it for a test ride but i was a little rattled as it wanted to dive into corners at low speed, could this be the fork springs?.

Is there anything else i should look into/replace before i go on a serious ride.

Thanks in advance

G'day there mate! There's quite an Ozzie contingent on here

Don't know much about your diving problem mate , though I'm sure a lot of the wise ones on here will give you good advice.

Maybe the tyres could be squared off , which would affect the handling in the corners , have a look at the rear tyre, it will be more noticeable , it should be a nice round profile with no flatness.

You could try sitting on the bike and see how much the front end dives using the front brake , if your using all the front fork travel then I wouldn't think that's right. Also the oil level may be low in the front forks , is there any sign of oil seepage around the fork seals?

Thank for the input hawkwind,

The tyres seem fine good pressure, i have come of a Suzuki Rf900 and the front end of my new baby does not give me confidence.
I know i will sort it out i think i will pull down the forks and see whats up

G'day Johnno. These old girls are heavy on the front end. Make sure the fork oil is good & at the correct level or even a little over full. As far as I know most run no air in the forks. Hopefully the springs are OK. If you are used to wider tyres then being on a heavy bike with slightly narrower ones will give the impression of falling int corners. Also as has also been said tyre pressures front & rear. Also steering head bearings. If all is good maybe you just need time to adjust to the difference.

I know this is an old thread, but i thought i would update my project.

Striped the bike, fairings that could be repaired off they went, for those in Victoria (austraila) MPR Plastic repairs in sunshine, they are slow but their work is 100% (they are ducati specialist's).

Front end rebuild, forks done (not by me, not enough time) wheel and head bearings re packed.
brake lines bled, and new brake pads installed.

Engine, not much new cct installed and new sump gasket to stop the leak, i will wait until i am comfortable with the bike to see if any more engine work needs to be done.

Rear end, swing arm rebuild bearing o.k. re grease wheel bearings done new brake pads installed and bleed the lines.

I am nearing completion, got all the fairing back today, will spend this sunday putting it all back together.

A roadworthy test and registration now awaits.

Will post some photo's on sunday (18.10.09) of her back together.

Can't Wait - it's just like christmas

Good news Johnno - great to hear she's nearly back in the land of the living !
Just FWIW - my bikes front end is fine, but when the front tyre starts to "cup" on the edges, she's inclined to turn in at low speed, or if the front pressure's too low. You won't feel it above about 30KPH, but it feels as though the bike wants to fall over in the corner and you have to hold onto the bars.........almost as though the front feels like it's folding under......
I rode an RF900 the other day and found that it turned in a LOT quicker than the 1000F....not a bad bike, but it doesn't have enough gears........plenty of go, though.
Let us know when Christmas comes, and send us pics for prezzies, OK he he
