RE: Which helmet is betterfull face or modular
There was an article on Motorcyclist last year, written with the research/help of the HURT Foundation about DOT and SNELL testing.
Theirconclusion was, in short, that you don't need a SNELL helmet, just DOT.
The test they perfomed revealed, that the harder the helmet the more energy the skull and brainreceived.
You want a helmet, that will dissipate the energy from ahit/trauma to the head.
In other words, a helmet when itdeflects, itwill slow the speed of impact, therefore reducing the energythe head/brain.
After this revelation, guess what??
SNELL did not admitted, that their testing had no real world value, but decide to lower their Testing Standards more closely to DOT.
The saying goes: "Imitation is themost sincere form of flattery".
So what does all this means to you about your helmet is, that as long as it is DOT you will be fine.
Modular are more practical for glass wearers, communication gadgets and if you do pleanty of "stop & go" to drink or ask questions, then a modular is for you.
They are heavier by nature and not very nice looking.
A full face will make you feel safer, but we all now know is not true.
Start reading this article and I'll see, if I can find the one in Motorcyclist.

I'm no expert on helmets or claim to be one.
I just posted, what I recall from the article and forthe record, I have a Shoei and Arai both full faceSNELL and DOT.
*Edit:
Found it!!!
It is a very interesting and revealing article,a must read.

RE: Which helmet is betterfull face or modular
I have a Nolan modular and I love it- I do wear glasses and a standard fullface is a pain in the *** with them. As to the Motorcyclist article, it was more like three or four years ago and their conclusion was not that a DOT helmet was fine but rather that in the overwhelmingly majority of crashes you're likely to be involved in that non Snell rated DOT only helmets actually provide better protection (all Snell rated helmets sold in the US also meet DOT standards but not all DOT helmets can pass Snell testing). While this may seem counterintuitive, you'll have to read the article (very long but good reading) to find out why. Snell's responce to the article at the time was pretty lame, but if they have changed their standards to reflect some of the concerns raised, more power to them. It's about time.

Yep, I had all my life using full helmets, you can imagine the pain in the neck trying to lite a cigarrete while wearing the helmet for that quick stop with your mates.
I got a Nolan N102 a couple of years ago, and that's a whole new word for convenience, in hot and sunny Mexico it helps a lot having the option of having your full face open, specially when you are strolling at low speeds in the city streets and sitting in traffic jams.
Of course on the open road you have all the coverage to elements and more, since you can put this communication gadgets and stuff.
It's about time to change my helmet by mid year, so ...modular will be my pick.
Cheers!!
