When the START button is pressed, the power is disconnected from the lighting system and diverted to the starter.

When the START button is released, the power is no longer diverted to the starter. The button moves to the upward position making contact and sending power back to the lighting system.

If the button is not returning back to the full resting position, OR, it is returning but not making proper contact, the lights will not come on. That is running or not running.

 

Just to add....

The power switching is all done in the relay. The start button is just an on/off switch. When it sticks, it doesn't allow the relay to switch back to base position. Also, don't overlook a possible faulty relay.

 

2 out of every 10 starts my light does not come on. I jiggle the start button and it comes on. A little contact cleaner helps but the problem always returns.

I've learned to live with it.

Like i said before. I keep my headlight switch on HI. If the blue light on my dash is lit, I know my light is working.

 

^ That's got me thinking now. I wonder how many times I've been riding w/o the headlamp on? From now on I'm gonna start the bike and switch to high just to make sure the lights are on.

The blue hi would indicate full contact on return w/o getting off and actually checking the headlamp. Usually, however I start the bike near the garage and see the shine from the bulbs but, I haven't been checking it when out riding.

Got home late last night from being out of town all week. First thing I do this morning is check out the start switch as suggested, to see if it's sticking. And it was. I bumped it a couple times, and bingo, on come the head lamps. You guys rock. I'm going to go get some electrical contact cleaner today and have at it. Thanks everyone!
