Default Is this a good buy? 1991 CBR 1K $2,700

Hello all,

I have a bike on deposit and I am hoping to get some ideas here if this is overpriced or not. I really want to get back into riding again after selling my 1989 Honda Hurricane 600 back in 94.

Bike is located in Massachusetts USA.

Does anyone think this is a good buy?

Thank you so much for your help,
John

Welcome to the Forum ! Sorry, no advice as I couldn't open the link...If you look at some of the earlier posts from the last two days there's a 1993 with full luggage for under $2000, that another member is considering......see pic attached. And one of my own "old lady"
If and when you get your bike, keep in touch and we'll find you all the manuals etc, and any advice we can offer. Plenty of guys here willing and able to help !

If that bike IS as clean as it looks and serviced, ready to ride, It looks like a good buy. If the tires need replacing, figure a $300 credit.

Here's a good example for your area...If you've never researched CL. Good buys can be had.

Hi Shadow1,

Thanks for the welcome. I did do several searches and even saw the one you mentioned. Thats the one that prompted me to post this, thinking the price was too high even thought the mileage indicated 16K. Ifixed the link so if your still able to review I would greatly appreciate it. Here it is again.

I called my local Honda dealer to be sure parts were still available and they seemed to think that parts were readily available to them.

I've been on this site for a couple days now and have been very impressed with the hospitality of yourself and many others who frequent this site. I look forward to reading more.

Thanks,
John

BTW - Thats an amazing looking CBR you have!

Hi BayAreaRider,

Your right, Craigslist is a great place to find some awesome buys. I have also been on the lookout there too. The CBR I put in deposit is not road ready, or at least the salesperson could not tell me so because its been in storage all winter. He was going to pull it out and have it looked over before I drive down there to inspect.

I appreciate your help and I will be sure to inspect the tires when I get there.

Thanks again,
John

Hi John, well, she's still got the stock exhaust shrouds which are generally one of the first things guys throw off when fitting 4-2-1 pipes, so that's a plus. Other than that she looks very good, but it's always hard to tell from pictures. Mileage ? Well, mine had 10031 miles on it 4 years ago, which I believe was genuine, and mine's a 1990 model. Thanks for the kind words by the way.
If the bike's not too far away, take the time to inspect it, and even take the side covers off - one screwdriver will do it in 5 seconds. Look under there and the carbs and suchlike are visible, as will be a good deal of muck if the mileage has been "moved back" shall we say...... Take pictures, post them up and let the guys on the Forum give you their opinion. If the bike's only done 16000 miles, it should be more or less at the end of it's second set of tyres. Try and get details of previous registrations, engine and chassis numbers etc and I'm sure we can tell you a few things about it.
For example, that colour scheme was released in 1990 and is designated BR - pic attached
Hope this helps
Pete

Craigslist is sweet! That's where I got ahold of my 1995.
I drove fromway south PA, all the wayNW Boston.I drove my pickup almost 24hrs straight to go pick her up.

I wanted one that was completely stock with low miles. It had absolutely nothing done to it, andonly had about 16k on it. I was the third owner. Some rich guy bought it off the showroom floor back in 1994/1995, then traded it in the following year (like he always does, apparently).
It actually went back on the showroom floor, and that's where the guy who sold it to me had gotten it.
Paperworkwas all legit.
He had it listed for$3500....but took my $2700, with the words "cash is king, man". He was a real down to earth guy, who's wife wanted him to get rid of a couple of his babies.
I couldn't be happier with it.

Only advice is to check it out real well, and run it. You should get a good or bad feeling.

Well, I decided not to inspect that bike and thought I would continue my search which turned up another 1991 Honda CBR 1000F. I have some pictures and some video of the bike running. The engine runs very rough and the seller says it needs a carb cleaning. Miles on the odometer reads 8,6xx miles. Thats great if you can believe it. I will upload all my pictures and video shortly. The video is big so I may have to find another place to but it for you to view.

Thanks everyone for your interest and advice, its greatly appreciated.
John

I uploaded the video to youtube. Below is the link. If you can, listen to the engine and see if you can tell weither this is truely a carb cleaning problem or other.

thanks again
