Generator Chain Tensioner
I know there is another thread on the CT, but this one is slightly different and very surprising.
My 1988 Hurricane 1000F engine rattle at 16K miles was becoming a little too much and decided to do the upgraded CCT, new chain guides x 3, carb cleaning and tuning.
Done.
After starting the bike again, the rattle was still present.
Mystery.
The tech started listening with a poor man's scope (long screwdriver) and isolated it to be around the generator area.
Decision was made to split the cases to find the source.
Problem found!!!
The spring loaded rod of the Generator Chain Tensioner, even though it was release from factory via a pin that holds it for assembly, the rod never pushed the chain into tension. The rod was binding!!! So the chain was constantly slapping around. The chain is very loose now and has lots of play between the links.
Replacing the GCT and chain as we speak now.
The engine internals look brand new, since changing oil every 3K miles pays off. God only know how many Generator Chain Tensioners were defective and the source of the infamous rattle on our bikes.

I will report once I get back my SILENT Hurricane.

Photos of the defective part that was causing the chain rattle.
Look at the Generator Chain Tensioner, the old one has still part of the pin, stuck/broken. This should have come out completely when the engine was assembled. The new one, once installed, the hook pin must be pulled out completely to release the spring that will tense the chain.
Hopefully no more chain slack noise.
Look at the new and old chains, how much link wear after only 16K miles.

Started this project with just a valve adjustment, carb cleaning and tuning. It ended up being an end all assault .
Isn't that how all projects usually start??? LOL
I am following your video series on rebuild on YouTube, they are a lifesaver.
The tape tip to align the generator oil passages and shaft, amazing!!!
Also, the Code for selecting the bearings, since mine you can barely see the coloring.
