My bike is in until I sove this but first of all need your advice:


I have second gen rotors , problem is they are 5mm thick and the standard for 87-88 is 4.5 to 4.7 when new. end of service 3.8.

Should I shave the pads until they are thin enough to fit porperly

or

get them thinned out at a machine shop

or get disk for an 88.

I know that Indiana hurricane has second gen disk, what did you do to get them on there without them being a problem.

ok i have done a bit of troubleshooting,

here it is:

i took off everything lubricated pins etc..., chgeck clearance of mounting bracket versus the disk all ok, i oot out the pads from the calipers and put them back on and the wheel is turning freely
two option left:

either i need to shave the pads or caliper piton are not moving back once i apply the brakes.

what are your toghts?

indiana did you have to do some magic when you put the disks on?

First thoughts are a sticky piston, I think more likely than the rotors being too thick.

 

Ok i put everything back by the book, left side drags just a bit but front side, as soon as apply the brakes , it jams. looks like i willl have to do an overall of both brakes calipers. Stiky pistons they do not move freely. i will look at the priceof seals, hoppefulsy there is some in stock but with what is happening in Japan i am a bit scared...

Hey Dragon can`t you go with aftermarket.

 

It does sound like the calipers to me as well. When you fit new pads there's heaps of clearance when the pistons are pushed right in to get the calipers back on. Shaving disks or pads (be careful about the dust!!) is not the way I'd go.

You might get away with just stripping them and cleaning everything right out. If you're really careful you might get away without having to buy too many parts.

 

Thanks i found the booboo one of the disk is warped, and it created the problem, i am looking for new disk
i cleaned all the calipers and all, turns much better but you can feel one of the disk is warped, i will buy two and won't take any chances as my previous disks were at the end of their useful life and i never had problems, ( they were at 3.6mm). Well i look at this this way i learned the intricacies of a brake system this week end! And it is now cleaned and working well. but i won,t take any chances and order new dust seals and oil seals for booth calipers , it does not cost much.

Anyway i won,t be able to ride soon as i hurt my wrist when the inital incident happened, the caliper got stuck and the handlebars swayed violently to the left , luckily i had stoped feeling there was something wrong before. and when i try to start again to go home and that is when it happened. took me and hour to get back home, do 1km get the brake system to cool down then do 1km at pace of 25km an hour.

I have an 87 and I fitted after market rotors that are 5mm thick and the calipers are fine, just make sure the pistons are all the way in. They work very well!!

 

Dragon, though my bike is second gen, I always had problems with the front brakes dragging. The pistons were old and a bit corroded, cleaned them up and greased them fitted new seals, but they were never perfect. Eventually I shelled out for new stainless pistons, (they came with new seals, so they got changed as well for the second time)

Now they're as good as new, no dragging and nice and sharp.

Hope the new discs sort out your problem

Well i am going to do the disk and the claipers as well, i have ordred the parts for the calipers, but might have to wait as they are all over the country and won,t be available from japan for a while, but as i say i have time , my wrist is hurt so i i will have time to do it.

For the disk i am waiting for someone to conact me back but i might go woith new ones, anyone purchased new disk on ebay here? what is the quality?
