Question Front Brake Lever

Hey guys! I think that my front brake lever isn't as smooth or light to sqeeze as it should be. Maybe its supposed to be this way, but it seems that there is a slight "rough spot" when I squeeze it that I have to get over which can make braking kind of scary sometimes. I just don't wanna be caught in a panic situation in which this problem could effect my stopping distance, or cause me to lock up the front wheel when trying to quickly get past this "rough spot." I'm basing my finding off of squeezing my '91 1000F's front brake and then squeezing my future brother in laws F4's front brake. Needless to say his is much smoother, but maybe that's because of 10 years of innovation hahaha! It seems that this problem only occurs when the bike is in motion, but I'm too lazy to go outside and sqeeze it.

I had a similar problem until I read right here in this very forum that if you squirt some oil in the back side of the break plunger, it will stop binding up.

Let us know how you made out.

I also found some dark matter in the reservoir and this dark matter was coming out of the calipers as well as I was purging the lines. I didn't quite get all of the matter out of the reservoir, but a great deal of it. It was easily enough accomplished though because it was soluble in the brake fluid. I wedged a screw driver in between the rubber seal thing and the plunger on the reservoir assemply and got some WD 40 (hope that wasn't a no-no) back there. The old brake fluid was pretty dang nasty. Needless to say my front brake system is 110% better now. When I squeeze the lever it has that nice fluid motion now. I changed the brake fluid in the rear break system as well although I didn't do the clutch line because my left fairing is kinda ghetto rigged up to the broken headlight fairing. The clutch is working fine although I'm sure it could use a flush as well. Thanks for the advice; it was just what was needed.

Glad you got it sorted, man.

Yes, this is true. When your lever starts to bind, gets jumpy, or does the "click click" as it moves... you can dab a bit of grease between the plunger end and where the lever makes contact. Just pull out the screw at the pivot, pop off the lever, and dab on the grease. It makes a big difference. I did it to the CBR a couple years ago and wow.
Same thing when I bought my magna. The previous owner said "Yeah, there's something really screwy with the front brake. It's not very smooth at all". When I got it home it literally took like 15secs and it was smooth as silk again. I bet it would benefit a lot of bikes out there. Just thought I'd mention it.

Awesome! This forum makes me feel better knowing that if I have a problem I don't know how to fix on a bike then there are plenty of motorcycle vets and those specializing in my make and model to help a newbie out!
