First Gear Question
Hi there guys , a little question to show my ignorance and inexperience
Ok I've only been riding for a few months and this is my first bike so have nothing to compare it with . But when I engage first gear from neutral there is quite a noticeable clunk , now this may just be a characteristic of the bike and a nice 'positive feel' to first gear. I have adjusted the drive chain 'cos it was a bit loose and it seems to be just the same as before . So is this normal or do I need to worry?[sm=feedback.gif]

Hi Hawkwind
This is normal. Relax....
When you pull in the clutch and select first gear you will get a clunk as the gearbox and clutch take up the slack to the chain.
This will be more noticeable when
[ol][*]cold - as cold oil and clutch "drag" a little more. This is normal.[*]old dirty oil - old oil and clutch "drag" a little more. This is NOT normal - change the oil.[*]The clutch is not disengaging properly - not likely your issue - more to followon this if required.[/ol]
Another thing - make sure your chain adjustment was as per the manual as you dont want it too tight.

Hi there Naga_Thai , thanks for the reply
Yes chain is adjusted as per the manual , didn't want it too tight for obvious reasons . Oil was changed as soon as I got the bike , was a bit dirty but is nice and clean now
If anything when the bike is cold (and I mean cold , we've got sub zero temperatures at the moment[&:][&:][&:][&:] ) the clunk is less pronounced . So will stop worrying and enjoy the big freeze

Oppps...I read the subject line and thought that it was a question about your first ridding gear purchases... ?

ow well , its early here and I am still only on my second coffee..
BTW... Naga_Thai pretty much covered it ...
except for just one other thing ...
Having your idle too high will make the clunk stronger and louder

Cheers Steve and good morning , will check the idle speed but I think its ok , probably just worrying about nothing .
