Engine's Strength

Does anyone know what the Horse Power on a 1988 cbr1000f be, rough estimate? random motorcycle spec websites say around 100 hp

Shadow 05-04-2010 02:09 PM

Have a look at the workshop manual section at the top of the page.
I think you'll get a surprise ! The 1000F restricted model in California had around 100HP, the German bike about 108HP, but the std bikes were from 125-133BHP depending whose lies you believe.....:)

kilgoretrout 05-04-2010 02:11 PM

That's about right.... but likely a bit more than 100.
I think the crank HP in the specs is 132, so I'd say about 105-120HP to the wheel.
The few dynos I've seen seem to agree.

Shadow 05-04-2010 02:12 PM

Maybe this ?

My ole 88 made 117 at the wheel, 72 ftlbs. of torque (might have made more, found out had a cylinder out of round while boring for piston kit). After mild headwork, 1049 kit and FCR's it made right at 130 ( can't remember exactly what). I still have printout of stock dyno session somewhere...

S'where I'd put it at too

At the end of the day , no matter what spec you may happen to read , ...all I know is that if you dare use all of the rev range with a full fist of throttle , they have enough power to pull christ from the cross ... and certainly enough to get my full attension when I hammer mine ...:icon_wink:

I do think the 100hp may be understating them though ...:icon_shrug:
Mine is an Aussie version and no way does she deliver only a 100hp....:icon_no:
I cant imagine them limited to that .... ? must be a bit weird to ride them like that I recon ..

Bio248 05-04-2010 06:22 PM

its not even that these bikes don't make that much power, but they make crazy amounts of torque. that's why they are so awesome.

Yeah, what he said^^^

Bordo 05-05-2010 04:33 AM

My old GSXF 750 had 100hp and while it went well these things would walk all over it. I'd figure they have at least 20 odd more hp.

3v1lj03 05-05-2010 12:03 PM

my 88 cbr600 hurricane came from the factory with 98hp. My cbr1000f is a lot heavier and a lot stronger then it was feels like 20 30 hp difference to me.

Boab 05-06-2010 12:51 AM

My Bertha has 135 at the rear wheel. Have added a dyno upgrade and a K&N filter. If you gun it from the traffic lights it will wheelie.. Not that i want it to do that .......;)

Bordo 05-06-2010 02:16 AM

thats impressive mate. I have a K&N filter as well. Mine hammers and is quite enough for me. I dont hammer her anyway considering she's old. I have the BB for that :icon_wink:

hurricanematt 05-06-2010 09:47 PM

1988 Honda Hurricane is rated at 132hp, at the rear wheel about 115hp.:icon_wink:
I love mine. Plenty of power even with my 240 lbs on her. Road test indicate 10.90's @ 126 mph. 154-161 mph dependiing on what archive u read. Hurrricanes and CBR 1000F basically the same bike were superbikes
of there day. In my opinion " a bike that still looks good that kicks ass and takes names"

Yer , I recon since I moved to the country , my CBR and quite a few rather quick fly by's of the locals on the open roads here has created plenty of talk around my area ...LOL:icon_laugh:

Bio248 05-07-2010 07:50 AM

i honestly can't say that this bike makes more torque than my old '85 FJ1100 did. that bike felt like it was going to rip my arms off past 7k, but this one just delivers it more smoothly.

The August, 1990 issue of Cycle magazine (RIP) tested the CBR1000. Max HP was 111.4 at 9,500. The more important torque hit 50 pounds at 4,000 and never dropped below until redline at 10,500. It made over 60 pounds from 5,750 to 9,750.

The September, 1990 issue of Rider magazine compared the CBR against Kawasaki's ZX-11. Luckily, they didn't compare them on the dyno or dragstrip. They preferred the Honda's "refinement" and called it the "everyman's motorcycle." The ZX-11 has awesome top-end power, but read this about Rider magazine's roll-on test against the CBR:

"Starting in top gear, in roll-ons from 40 mph with the Ninja ZX-11, it wasn't until getting down to second gear in each bike that the Ninja ZX-11's engine speed was high enough to exert its top-end advantage and make the bike pull away from the CBR1000F. Even though their overall drive ratios are quite close in every gear, the Honda would simply walk away from the Kawasaki in sixth, fifth, fourth and third, showing off its ample low- and mid-range grunt."

hurricanematt 05-12-2010 03:09 PM

I have a Cycleworld 1988 issue where they test 7 bikes. The Honda Hurricane 1000, Kawasaki Ninja ZX10, Kawasaki Concours,BMW K 100RS,
Suzuki GSX-R1100, Suzuki Katana 1100, and the Yamaha FZR 1000.

The top speed test the Kawasaki Ninja ZX10 went 167 mph and the Hurricane 1000 went 161 mph. The next closest was the Yamaha FZR 1000 at 156 mph.

Quarter mile the Kawasaki ZX10 went 10.46 @ 134.32 and the Hurricane
went 10.82 @ 127.29 mph. The Suzuki Katana and the Yamaha FZR 1000
were about a tenth quicker than the Hurricane 1000.

What Cycle World said about the Hurricane was " We believe the best rounded performer among all the current street bikes is the Hurricane 1000. It offers all but the last few percent of the performance of the street racers, handles better than something its size really should, and still
manages to do a fair job of coddling its rider. Its an amazing motorcycle
that does everything well. " this is on page 40.

I have read other road tests that show the Hurricane 1000's top speed
to have been been 161 mph and the Kawasaki Ninja ZX10 to have been at 158 mph. Either way both bikes are fast and it looks like in the top speed contest of the late 80's it was between the Kawasaki Ninja ZX10 and the Honda Hurricane 1000. All the rest were in their wake !

The Hurricane 1000 was only offered in 1987 and 1988. So maybe you are one of the lucky ones that own one.

mattski0_0 05-17-2010 01:09 AM

I remember reading in a review somewhere that you needed to hit sixth in quite a specific rev range to achieve top speed on the cbr, the difference was only about 5 or 6 mph, but apparently they could replicate it.

davethepom 05-17-2010 05:45 PM

Rolls Royce used to state the performance of their cars as "sufficient". I think this appropriate for our bikes too. Loads of bikes these days have much more 'power' but when is enough power enough? These things also pull like a train from 4k so you don't even have to change down from 6th to overtake, or you can go down four gears in which case you feel like you're being shot out of a cannon:D:D. The front tyre skims the ground and the back's just about spinning! Not only that, but they apparently still do all this after over 20 years!!!

"Sufficient"...sh!t yeah:).

wolfman 1000 05-17-2010 09:07 PM

That sounds about right, after all most modern super bikes have more power better hadling . They do wheelies and stopies but thier still only as good as the ass on top. Most riders will never experience thier bikes true potential. I have been riding bikes for 34 years and the more I ride this bke the more I realise how true that is. Why worry about who's got the most power. When and if you can out ride the bike then think carefully about, if you need more. Why pay for a new superbike if you cant hadle what it's got to offer. The cane does all I want and more, so I guess what I'm trying to say is just enjoy it and be happy, after all we have got one of the most balanced bikes and at a fraction of the cost of the new bikes.

kilgoretrout 05-17-2010 09:12 PM

^^ Exactly, wolf. These bikes are no slouch, either. Plus, how would you ever do 1300+ miles on a new superbike in a weekend? There's just no way, you'd be half dead. I feel 100% right now. No sore azz, back, or hands... nothing. I could do it all again tomorrow. There's so much to be said for a great balance of everything. Few bikes have it.

wolfman 1000 05-17-2010 09:31 PM

That was good ride out bud, was it just for the jollies or did you go some were and back?Sounds like you had fun any way, good on ya and your dead right about doing it on a super bike. They would have to straighten you out after that. personally I do those sort of mile on my other bike. Not because the cane cant but because the wing does it with even more comfort. My longest ride in a day was from Oxford to Millan in 1 day. That was on the wing and apart from being tierd I was able to walk without sticks and a back brace.

kilgoretrout 05-17-2010 09:39 PM

Oh yeah, great time. Rode down to Tennessee from Pennsylvania and then all over the place for a few days. I left here around 330pm and got to camp around 230am or so...
I'm actually surprised at how good I feel. I expected to be in pain at least somewhere. The longest trip I did on the cane was just less than half that in a day, and my hands were sore the next day. I think the new gel pro-grips helped a lot, even tho I didn't think they would.
But yeah, the wing must be like riding a sofa! :)

wolfman 1000 05-18-2010 02:43 AM

It's great for those long journey's especialy when I go away camping cos they lady likes the extra luxuries the trailer allows me to carry. The cbr has Krauser removable panniers and rack so for work and hotel weekends and of coarse those fun days out, when I'm playing with the sports bike brigade. Some of which dont like the fact that this 22 years old bike and 50 year old rider can keep up and some times leave them standing. This proves to be a constant source of entertainment. Bless um, these young powerangers dont like being shown a back wheel
