I would check for a leaky exhaust at the head, and coils and leads for cracks.

Mine does the same thing , it was like it when i bought it , so i custom made my tools and i had a tappet day to cure the noise , and it was gone for about a week, now its back to tap tap tap as it ticks over, not loud but enough to annoy me but loud enough to be heard and remind me its there as i ride and at speed i can hear it aswell tapping away as i go down the motorway... i want to sync my carbs before this weekend, but everybody says do the valves first, so its a bigger job to get my carbs done and a recent broken little finger is slowing me down....

I know you guys don't have the same kind of cam chain tensioner lifter thingamabob...but you do have tensioner arms, guides, and pins, all very close to the cam chain. And a loud clicking noise near the valve train is a common symptom of my bike's tensioner being too close in contact with the chain...clicking merrily as it goes around. Maybe check on that before you interrogate the valve tappets again.

Possibly a lifter that is bleeding down?

I did the same thing. Adjusted valves, sounded good for a few weeks...right back at it.
It does, in fact, drive me crazy. CC was tight on inspection...

I did a little more investigating tonight on the source of the ticking. I visually checked for bad plug wires/coils and found no issues, then ran the engine with the tank raised in my darkened garage and looked for any arcing and there was none. I then checked for exhaust leaks at the header and found none. I moved all around the engine with my ear very close and it seems the noise is not emanating from the valve cover area, but more from the lower end. Seems about the same on either side of the engine. Any more ideas?

How tight was the feeler gauge when you checked the valves? I adjusted mine too loose and it was very loud. I went back in and made sure the next size up feeler DID NOT go in. All is good now.

I adjusted mine the same way you did, withthe spec gauge (.004 intake, .007 exhaust) and ensured the next size up would not fit after adjustment. I have to assume that is pretty much spot on!
