engine braking sound

engine braking sound
Hi all,
I just went on a 1000 mile trip last week with my 1987 CBR 1000F Hurricane. With about 100 miles left, I started to hear a noise in the left side of the engine when engine braking. As soon as I pull in the clutch or start to accelerate again, the noise stops. The noise sounds like a tapping or clicking sound that is completely random. It does not time with the regular engine sound at all. I am completely perplexed of what it could be. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I moved your question here into the abyess of 1000F knowledgeable members , of which we have quite a few ...lolol , and approved your post as a new member ..
As for the noise , chit , it could be any of 3 things at least ...
L/H side hey ? clutch in or accelerate and it goes away ? ... hmmm ....
My first thought is that you may have a bad clutch bearing or springs ?
Personally , it is very hard to determine what the noise is without hearing it ..
Does she make the noise just revving her standing still ???
I would normally go for the cam chain slapping under deceleration perhaps and when you pull the clutch , the load goes off it and shuts it up ...
Same with accelerating , the chain tends to shut up too ....
When was her last oil change ?
any chance of getting a sound vid ??? we do them here all the time for this kind of thing ....
Just make her make the noise , then upload it to UTube and post it up here for all the brain-iacs to listen too ... LOLOL
anyway ...your post is up in the right place now and we certainly can help , if we have enough information mate ....

Does it happen when the bike is stationary? If not it could be a bearing or front sprocket.

hmmm think you might be hearing primary chain slap. My 93 has what is best described
as a clacking sound on heavy deceleration. Couple of Guys I was hanging with last week
suggested this might be the issue and if that's the case it will stay that way for
a hell of a lot longer and until it gets too noisy to ride anymore
But you could pop the cam cover and check everything is torqued down to spec and check
valve clearances and springs ( this is my next move with the similar issue I'm hearing on mine)

Think as I asked a while ago , we need a sound vid to be sure ...
I get some bad **** slapping, from my rear wheel, when it's hopping all over the bloody place!!, when trying to avoid running over pensioners at pedestrian crossings ...!!! lolol
Primary slapping Mark ???hmmmm .... I have not got that and if any worn and thrashed primary had it , it should be mine I would imagine ?

The easiest thing to check up front would be chain tension. You should have about 1 inch of up and down movement when sitting on the bike (not on the center stand). It could simply be that the chain is hitting and needs to be tightened.
Also a loose chain has the tendency to climb on the teeth of the front sprocket when loose.
Check that first and let us know what you find.
