Do I need front wheel bearings?
So I finally got the axle off. The left side bearings were ok, but I changed them anyway. Easy enough. Right side bearings came out in pieces, but the outer race decided to stay with the wheel. Any ideas how to get that out? It's tight as hell.

Try a long flatheat screwdriver and slowly hammer it out from the other side (inside), BUT only if you can see the lip of the race. Work slowly and in cirrcles, thsi way the outter race can slowly come out without damaging anything else.

Yer ..all the special tools would be great to have up on the wall Martin ...
Me, I still after a million years , use the what ever tool that is close , that I have at hand method ...

Assorted punches, levers and a choice of 3 hammers ...

I concur - however, sometimes by knowing how it is done correctly gives one a little more confidence to use that bloody big hammer that you've got in you hand.
Knowledge is Power .... not only the Hammer.

Speaking of special tools Martin..
I have been looking for an RK Chain tool kit , like is available in the US for around the $90.ish..
Have you of any others seen anywhere in Aus that keeps them..
I Googled it and can seem to find none ..?
I would be happy with any other good brand ones as long as they are ok ..?

Finally remembered to report back. I could not get the outside bearing race free from the hub with any of the tools I had (drifts, propane torch, dremel, wd 40the usual suspects). Finally bit the bullet and took the wheel to a dealer, and the techs there got it free. Bike went back together easily enough and works fine. Changing the bearings would have been easy enough without the broken races on the right side, so I think I'll just change them more frequently from now on. Now I get to try out my new heated gloves.
