Speaking of special tools Martin..
I have been looking for an RK Chain tool kit , like is available in the US for around the $90.ish..
Have you of any others seen anywhere in Aus that keeps them..
I Googled it and can seem to find none ..?
I would be happy with any other good brand ones as long as they are ok ..?

RE: Do I need front wheel bearings?
Finally remembered to report back. I could not get the outside bearing race free from the hub with any of the tools I had (drifts, propane torch, dremel, wd 40the usual suspects). Finally bit the bullet and took the wheel to a dealer, and the techs there got it free. Bike went back together easily enough and works fine. Changing the bearings would have been easy enough without the broken races on the right side, so I think I'll just change them more frequently from now on. Now I get to try out my new heated gloves.
