I'm not an electronics wiz, but maybe some of you would like to build your own digital voltmeter

I'm using a simple and cheap LED indicator that I like a loton my Bird, not the one on the link but just to show what I mean http://www.customdynamics.com/LED_battery_gauge.htm

It is much easier to see the LED colour even if you are not directly loking on it, compared to a digital display.

 

R1000, how about posting a picture of the one you've got and how it's mounted ? Having a LED gauge would be great, but where to mount and how big or small.

 

I was almost afraid anyone would ask this... The LED indicator is something that has been laying in the garage for decades. It is the very cheap, but perfectly functioning type, that you put into a cars cigarette lighter outlet to monitor the charging system. I removed the large cig-adapter part of it with a saw and just glued it to the back of the clutch reservoir to make it as invisible as possible. I have filled the internal of the unit completely with silicone so it will survive rain and vibrations. It is almost hidden by that but the LED's can be seen perfectly well. It shows normal-voltage, under-voltage and over-voltage, depending in how the LED lightsare combined. I checked the LED’s calibration with an adjustable power supply and a digital multimeter before installing it. I was surprised that this little cheap thing indicated so correctly by the LED's and therefor installed it on the bike.

R1000, thanks for the photo. I'll have to keep an eye out for one. I wonder if it would be possible to remove the LED's from their housing and mount them at the end of a wiring harness. Maybe build into the dash someplace. I don't know, just thinking out loud.

 

Yes that should be quite easy, and youwould get thenot-so-nicepiece out of sight by doing this.
