Default Coolant Leak

Following on from my thread 'No Fan'...
Discovered coolant leaking from just behind the lowest bolt under the water pump with engine running.
I'm going to start by replacing the water pump cover gasket. In the manual it says drain the coolant and the oil (for water pump removal).
Do I need to drain the oil if I'm just removing the water pump cover and not the whole pump?
Thanks all.

Well, I replaced thewater pump cover gasket (big o-ring) but I still have a leak when the engine's running.
Drops of coolant form just behind the lowest bolt but I think the leak is coming from somewhere as bit higher up in the pump body.
Looks like I'll have to get a whole new pump unless anyone knows different.

Not sure about the cane, but sometimes the lower water pump bolt is the coolant drain bolt. It should have a crush washer to seal it. They can leak if a new seal is not used.

Just a thought.

Demon is on the money here with the drain bolt

&

it is not uncommon for the clamp at the lower hose
beside the pump to need a good tightening - they
seem to weep a bit when cooler weather arrives

I replaced the water pump cover gasket but it still leaks.
As I said at the start of this thread a drop of coolant forms just behind the lowest bolt of the water pump cover when the engine is running, two or three per second.
I had a look up behind where the drops form with a mirror and a few centimeters up there's a hole that looks like it ought to be sealed.
Could something have come adrift when my fan stopped working and the engine got very hot?
Anyone know whether the hole ought to be there, or what goes in it, because it looks like this is where the leak is.
I'm going to take off the pump and have a closer look.

I don't remember why I had my cover off this past summer but I do remember that I had to replace the o-ring on the pipe going to the pump. I don't remember seeing the hole you are talking about. Keep us posted.

Sounds like a shaft drain weep hole.
My bet is on a complete waterpump replace

Default There's a hole in my water pump, dear Liza, dear Liza...

Here's a picture of the hole in my water pump. I'm pretty sure that coolant leaks from here when the engine's running.
The hole goes all the way through the casing, through it I can see the shaft rotate when I turn the pump blades.
Should this hole be there? Should it be plugged? What with?
Thanks all.

Yes it's supposed to be there. It's a shaft weep hole.
Your shaft seal is bad and that's why it's leaking from there.

You need to replace your water pump
