Hey, fellas.
What kms do you guys change your cam chains at? My '94 has done 55k (km), and is still pretty quiet (once it warms up!). I've been advised 50k is normal, but I don't want to part with the cash if it's not needed yet.
Also, what brands of cam chain do you suggest?

G'Day Dave, I've just installed my third camchain, having covered 38000 miles. These bikes have two faults
1 Camchain rattle
2 Electrical/charging problems
I used a DID camchain, which has a split link, allowing you to thread the new chain into place without removing the engine, which you would have to do with an OEM part which has no split link. Takes around 4-5 hours to do, and I'd suggest you put one in quite soon - you wouldn't want the chain to become so loose that it jumps sprockets....not a good thing. I can't hear how much rattle you have at startup, so it's hard to judge the state of your chain. They aren't that expensive, obtainable most places, but be careful of some mail order parts people who'll sting you. I can send you one from here with the correct 150 links, for about $70 US (you'll have to do the exchange bit, sorry) Hope this helps.

 

Dude what have you been doing to make it your third cam chain?

Mine has done 107,000km most of it thrashed and is only on its 2nd cam chain.

 

Hi Trips/Dave....I suspect that my mileage isn't accurate, and she's done a good bit more....the second camchain was, I think, either faulty or used, advertised as new but arrived with the packaging open.....
Damned thing started rattling inside 3 months, so I changed it....rather safe than sorry,IMHO.
This one seems fine, and should last a good long time.It better, I'm too busy with electrical problems.....

 

Um you do know the rattling cam chain is normal and not an indication of wear. Even my brand new Cam Chain Tensioner rattled after a few 1000k's. As long as the rattling stops when it warms up. The only way to check a chain is to see if it pulls of the teeth.

 

Yes thanks, Trips, aware of that, but it was buzzing in a week and the rattle was SERIOUS at 3 months, so much so that the cam chain was lifting on the sprockets, and there was at least 10MM
(about 3/8 inch) play between the sprockets. (And the rattle didn't go away when warm)To me, that chain was stuffed, so I replaced it. The new one has covered around 3000 Kilos now, and no problem.I guess I got robbed the previous purchase-Live and learn......

Thanks for the offer Shadow 1, but it's cool I can get one here. Ofthe 55kI'vedone 30k and I don't thrash it all the time (third gear could loose my licence, and my kids faces cross my mind when I start to misbehave these days). I changeoil every 5k and oil filter every10k. Under these conditions how many kms is reasonable do you think?
This bike's a long term keeperfor me.The more I ride it, the more I like it!

Hi Dave, maybe as a test, you could remove the tappet cover, and push on the chain between the cam sprockets (you'll have to take the sprocket guard off too.) and if you do all that, you may as well replace the chain.....
To be honest, I don't know what a good chain should last, but Trips has averaged over 50 000 K's on his, I would have too, but for a bum chain, so maybe at 55000 K's it's time for a change ? I'd never done one on this bike before, but if you follow the manual, it's not too difficult.....If you need a manual, get one at
