Cam chain NOISE
#11
Although the noise is a pain in the ar$%se, i just put up with it, the bike has never let me down and is ridden 7 days a week no matter what the weather, its lucky if it gets washed once a month.
One day i will get aroung to it, but am currently in the middle of 2 bike rebuilds which is taking up more time than i had first planned
In the end i just turn the music up louder and the cam chain noise mellows out
thanks for the responses

Hello guys...just wondering if , by any chance, there was a replacement for the tensioner? I had bought one for my 1100gixxer that was manually adjustable to eliminate cam chain tensioner failure. It quieted her down too...anything similar for our 1000's?

As the tensioner is internal, there is NO aftermarket tensioner that I am aware of. That's why there are so many posts on noisy tensioners for the CBR1000F
Naga Thai has just completed a comprehensive how to on the replacement of the CCT.
Cheers, SB

Hey:
My bike had the 1st chain MK1 replaced at around 40,000 with a MK2 tensioner too. I used Mobil 1 10/40 MXT oil then. It had a second MK2 chain/tensioner installed at 100,000 it lasted to 150,000 and was still ok whenI replaced it then but was real noisey. It had been loud since 25 K in. I moved to 20/50 Mobil one racing oil and put a MK3 tensioner and sliders in and at approximately 200,000 I have went a 103,000 mile on this setup and is just starting to get noisey again.
They really like the heavier weight oil, I change it everytime I see it get darker coloured or 5,000 miles whichever comes first. I check it every week, I use Shell 5/40 in my other CBR and get about the same noise from it, but has less than 15,000 miles on it. Then chains have never been real loose when they have been replaced nor the tensioners worn except the first MK1 tensioner. The times I have changed to thinner oil during the colder weather is when I have noticed more noise. I now only use 20/50 in them, year round here but it does not get very cold here. Both bikes are run pretty hard as weather permits, and I feel that the chains would last longer but the older tensioners could not. I will be changing the complete motor out next time most likely but I may just change the newer tensioner out only and see how it goes, just to let you know. I have seen a few chains fail but all have been higher mile MK1 bikes. They have also been the only tensioner failures I have heard of as well.

Hey:
Woofer, in my case the cam and sprockets still look good the last time it was changed out. They are the original 88 cams on MK 3 sprockets that have been slotted. This time when I get around to replacing it will tell the most as I have not done anything but drive it, change oil, drive chains & sprockets, tires, brake pads, and fork seals as needed.
This will also tell what I think of the D I D chain with link vs the 1st time use of the Tsubaki kit. But I suspect there won't be any difference, but can't say for sure till she comes apart this time. I also clean and check the pan after 3 regular oil changes and use a Stainless filter with magnetic plug. At last change I had very little metal build up on the magnetic plug.I will be going to the stainless filters on all my bikes I think as I a very happy with them so far. They just are a pain to clean out. Woof I hope this helps.
