I bought a couple of clip on mater links, but I think the kit I bought has a rivet link. i have a rivet link tool. If I think I can handle the rivet(better than I did when I took the chain off! LOL) I may just rivet it.

My parts came today, and I realized I cant use the front sprocket they sent. It doesnt have the bolt holes to bolt on the front plate to the front sprocket. So I decided to use the chain for now to get me back going. I didnt realize I needed to use a tool to put on the clip link until I wrestled with it for thirty minutes trying to get the clip link cover down far enough for me to slide the clip on.

I really hope this chain thing gets easier! Tomorrow Im going to bolt the sprocket cover back on and take her for a test spin. I sure will be glad to get her back on the road again........hopefully!!

One question. I dont have a torque wrench for the front sprocket. I got it tight the best I could to about where I thought it should be. How likely are the front sprockets to coming off on Hurricanes? Seems like it should stay on pretty good with the way the cover fits.

I got it all together using new chain, same old sprockets, and a clip master link. Gonna have to send the sprockets back and get the correct ones.

One thing that concerns me is I can see the rivet heads of the clip master link touch the plate that bolts to the front of the sprocket as it passes across the front sprocket. I wonder if this is something to be concerned about?

Well , first up if you are going with the clip I'd advise not using the the
"chain guide plate" for exactly the issue you are describing. Yep they
can be run without that plate anyway , my 1990 with the 18 tooth on
front runs without the plate.

my 2cents ...... and just an opinion ...... use a rivet master

Also if running without the guide plate correct chain alignment and tension
become a slightly more regular maintenance item to stay on top of.....imo
but anyway these should be checked every four or five hundred miles anyhow.

Thanks Sprock! If I can remove the sprocket plate, I can go ahead and install the 17 sprocket. The only reason I couldnt use it is because it didnt have the bolt holes for the plate. Decisions decisions!

I wouldn't be happy about that Ronnie.

No big deal Ronnie , when you go smaller sprockets up front you have to take 'em off
too or they get all chewed up ..... ask me how i know this lol

Just keep your chain tension correct there'll be no worries .... a good mechanic always
ends up with some extra bitz anyways

Did I mention a rivet master is preferable imo lol

Ok, all this does get easier the more I do it. Just pulled everything back down and installed the new sprockets. Bout to put the plastics back on and go for a spin. Im eager to see how a 17 tooth does. It's been 1 tooth down since I bought it several years ago. It will be nice to have a fairly accurate speedometer. I dont ride this bike hard. It's my daily commuter so I baby her.
And Sprock, I will be running a clip link, at least for the time being. I need to watch some "how to" youtube videos or something before i start messing with links again! I have really done some butcher work with chains so far! LOL

Rode it in to work today with the new set up. For my use, I really like the stock gearing better-16 miles one way of highway. Im eager to see if I can squeeze another mile or two per gallon now!
Sprock, I just might have to try the 18 tooth one day!
