Sure it's the cable? The plastic gear thingy that goes onto the bolt on the front sprocket seems to break more often than the metal cable.

That little plastic part is a poor design. Mine failed once.

Easy to check. Pull the left side, front sprocket cover and look at it.

spin the cable with a drill, see if the speedo works. look carefully at the drive gear. the teeth should not be concave at all. the gears only mesh on the tips.

I didn't explain it right. Take another look at the plastic thingy. The back side is hexagonal. It fits perfectly over the bolt head holding down the front sprocket. It looks fine, but it gets cracks in the corners of the hexagon, expands slightly, and then the sprocket bolt-head just spins in the plastic hexagon without turning it. I couldn't find it in the Honda Manual, but the Honda Dealers have it and it's only a few dollars.

Somebody here had that issue at one point and used a two part epoxy (like jb weld)
to fix it, put some plastic wrap or foil over the bolt head and set it in the "cracked plastic hex
piece" and let it set, bolt released after and the hex was as strong as before

Glad you got her set, I think the plastic peice on mine went out this week, since the speedometer started bouncing then only worked at low speeds, and now not at all, oh well Ill fix her eventually, never really looked at the speedo any ways...
