Default Brake Wear

What kind of distance do you guys get on a set of brake pads. My '94, with the linked brakes has even wear, front/rear with about 20% left at 24K miles. I got the bike 2 1/2 years ago with 8500 on the clock. Half my miles are interstate pounding, but much of that is two up with full bags. I was a little surprized at the wear but not shocked considering how heavy we go.

I"ve got 39K on my 94 and still using the original pads. I have to admit though that I have not checked the condition of the pads recently. I have been riding the F3 much more than the 1000F in the last 6 months. I too got mine a little over 2.5 years ago with 14K on it. I only rode 2 up for 2 months before my wife decided she wanted in on the fun too. I don't think that the wear you are getting is all that out of the ordinary, particularly 2 up. There are many riders on this forum who have had the 1KF for much longer and would have more experience with how long they last.

BTW
That is a mighty fine looking machine you have there, if I do say so myself .
That wouldn"t be the Gap in the photo is it ?

+1 Idodirt, but much depends on the quality of pads fitted to the bike - OEM pads seem to last well, but are quite expensive compared to aftermarket. I've done 65000 K's on my bike now, and am still on the set I fitted at 40,000 (aftermarket)- a good bit left. Don't go below 2mm on the pads - braking will be adversely affected.

Yep, In Oz we have hot discs and its cheap to run in new pads. I always clean my caliper and pads every 5000 and change when the indicator strip has 2mm left. Discs are more expensive than pads - cheap insurance.

Yes, it depends on the type of rideing and the pad material. I use DP brand and they are OK. I think I have about 20k miles on the pads now. The fronts are getting a little grabby and I need to check them. I may go with a softer pad in the rear as I would like better stopping back there (I de-linked).

BTW, cb2cbr, I also have a '94 and just mounted the same bags in that color.

Hey Tim- You will like the GIVI bags. They are little big, looks wise, but I always seem to fill them up. When I got them I thought I got the last 1000F adapter kit made. Aftermarket vendors don't think about older model bikes for very long. Do you have the "WingRack II" ?

I guess it really depends on what type of riding you do and where. Lot's of motorway miles will see your pads last for ever. Here in the u.k. we're stop start most of the time. I use Ebc HH pads on my 89 and checking my record the last set of front pads lasted 13,000 miles. My last rear set lasted 12,000 but I do tend to use the rear brake a lot due to slow moving traffic etc. I also went through a set of rear pads in 400 miles! This turned out to be a jammed slide pin on my caliper. Cooked the disc too. I should have noticed it but it only took 2 days from new to ruined [:@]

Yes, I decided to get the N140 so that I could mount a top bag if needed. I found out quickly (due to the new girth) that I could throw a case up top and ride like that to pick up things I need. If more room is need I could always mount two bags below.

Shadow1, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. None of the other bagged bikes look as good as the 1kF when they are bagged. They may be a little dated but they sure are holding their own. I will have to post pictures of mine (I will have to wash it first).

Steve_Cardiff, funny thing, I have been hearing a clacking up front. My pins are loose. I will have to pull them at some point to check them. I think they are worn.
I know that the brass buching in the clutch lever is worn.
