Default Brains trust needed! check out 3v1lj03's noise.

Hey fellas. One of our fellow inmates has a ba5tard of an engine noise. It's over in the video section so I thought I'd put a link here in case some of you don't look in there. Hopefully one of you clever chaps will be able to help him.

I added the vid to your post, Dave.
I thought about moving it over here when I saw it, too. Good call.

Honestly, sounds to me like oil starvation.

Whatever it is, stop running the engine. I think oil starvation wouldn't show up immediately (unless there's no oil at all) I wonder is the plastic gears on the balancer exploded (they're hard plastic gears so unlikely)

Despite my threats to run it until it blows in the other thread I have not started it since the video.

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't run the motor like that any more. (if you aren't trying to kill it... )

The bike could still be full of oil. I've seen it on a honda car before.
The oil pickup tube could have dropped, possibly a plugged/broken oil line, broken chain/sprocket/pump, etc.
I'm not saying that starvation is for sure the problem, just saying that it sounds a lot like it.

And I can't think of many issues like this that arrive after the bike's just been sitting.
It's odd, that's for sure.

Obvious ? when you ran the bike, did the oil light go out?

It's a weird one alright! What's a good way to check that the oil's circulating properly? Like malboja said, the oil light should indicate this. I gotta say, it's got me fked.

3v1ljo3. Make a list of all the possibles that eveyone comes up with and go through one by one starting with the easiest and tick 'em off when you've 100% ruled them out. Be dead sure about each one otherwise you'll be going around in circles.

And now for the bad news....You have spun connecting rod bearings. There is enough oil between the rods and crank so that it will not be so loud when cranking over. When it is running the rod is trashing the crank journal. The noise travels up the cylinder bore and that's why it is heard in the top and bottom. The oil pump may be working fine but if the oil level dropped to where the pickup was not supplying oil to the pump the rods would trash the rod bearing. To fix the bike the engine needs to come out and pulled apart. You will need to inspect the rods to see if they need to be replaced. The crank will most-likely need replacing. You will need rod bearings upon reassembly and oil pressure checked before running.

When you drain the oil you will see metal from the rod bearings in the bottom of your drain pan.

SORRY FOR THE BAD NEWS.
