Default Body Panel Molds

You know, it seems that I am far from alone in having trouble finding body panels for the 90 and 91 CBR1000F. Seems like everytime a new joiner to the forum buys a used one, they are looking for one panel or another.

So, I have been talking to someone I know in Raleigh, NC with a body shop about trying to make some molds of an intact bike's body panels. Then we could reproduce them on demand since the aftermarket does not care to keep molds for bikes over 8 years old.

The thing is, my bike's body work is not complete. And some of the panels that I do have are cracked or have tabs broken off.

If I was able to get the materials to construct molds, would anyone else on the forum be interested? If I succeed, I will be able to duplicate virtually any panel for anyone on the forum. I don't know what the cost would be yet. It depends on a great many things. Including a well-ventilated shop to use. But I am tired of not being able to find these without buying new ones from the dealer for $400 to $600 each.

Any comments? Do any of you think this would be a worthwhile endeavor? I am not out to make a huge profit here. But since I am frustrated at the complete lack of aftermarket panels and good used ones on ebay, I thought about trying to mold my own. And if it works, sharing my labor with others.

Also, is there anyone in North Carolina, South Carolina, or Virginia with a complete bike that would let us make molds of their body panels?

Right now, I am not sure what the effect of the release agent would be on paint. I am just doing a little research and thought I would throw this out there and see if there are others that think like me. :-)

Just curious.

I've got a couple of cracks on my 88 and would be interested for a good price.

I don't think the 88 cane shared any body panels with the 90-91 that I was targetting. So that would have to be a different set of molds.

However, if there is enough interest, the shop I am talking to might consider both sets of molds. However, I would need another "source" machine to take the molds from.

I check ebay every day looking for the main fairing (the one that contains the headlight) and I haven't seen it yet. At least not for the 90 or 91. I have seen just about every other panel from a 94 out there. But I really need the upper.

My 88 has some cracks on the rt. side and the ears on the upper fairing. I would be down for the sides and the upper and the 90-91 will be fine. Give the old girl a face lift.
