Angry BL33DIN Forks!!

During the winter months I changed the front fork seals as the right hand seal was leaking , used the original Honda seals and dust covers and did everything by the book. Everything seemed tight and clean , no sign of leaks.

The stanchions had a few spots of rust when I replaced the seals , nothing severe , so I used a washing up scrubber with a bit of metal polish to get rid of it. I didn't scratch the **** out of them , as I said it was only a couple of spots . But now they're leaking again and it's pi55ing me off 'cos I don't know where I went wrong??

Will have to replace them again of I suppose , but can just a tiny bit of rust cause the seals to leak? Can the stanchions be re-chromed and is this a specialist job or would any electo-plating company be able to do it?

Any advice guy's? Just don't want to replace them for a second time to have the same old story in a couple of months

Might be the only solution Steve , though the bit of rust that was there was way up on the stanchion , I was in two minds weather to bother polishing it off , but as I had the forks off I thought I may as well before it gets any worse .

If the weather turns wet in the next few days I'll whizz them out again and have a look , cant do any harm.

New ones from my local 'bits' shop are £95 each and as both are weeping that'll be £190 'thank you sir', plus seals fork oil and may as well do the bushes while I'm at it and for that matter 'we can sell you a pair of Hagon progressive springs for £55 . Where will it all end????

Yep, even slight scratches from polishing can do it.
Maybe some light buffing compound would do it some good, but if the seals are already weeping, you may as well replace them.
Sad but true.........
Are you SURE they were original Honda parts ???
Could they have sold you some dodgy ones ?

The guys I bought them from list them as original Honda , got them from these guys they're pretty good normally , listed under Forks and suspension.

Expensive , but at least they include the dust caps as well. Will take some pic's of the forks when the weather turns wet , 2see what you guys think. Probably day after tomorrow.

TYPICAL!

Not listed ATM - might be worth hanging on for when they get listed again

Thanks Harry , were they second hand , or new ? I'm thinking of getting new or a re-chrome . Don't want the hassle of doing them for the second time only to have them leak on me again . 2 or 3 seal changes and I've already paid out what a new pair would have cost!
