Default Battery Issues

hello again gents (and ladies i suppose) thanks for all the great advice with the carbs. Everything is fantastic. I have ran into a new problem however 2 days ago the battery ran completely dead, i purchased a new one thinking perhaps it was old since i just bought it, great worked like a charm, however later the next day the new battery also ran completely dead, so dead that even if i jumped the bike, it would not run, luckily i threw the old one on the charger and had it close by. So now the bike runs well while the battery is charged, but throught the day it seems as though its being drained, or simply not recharged. I have ordered the replacement
ELECTROSPORT INDUSTRIES REGULTR/RECTFR CBR/ST ESR230 HONDA CBR/ST

have i jumped ahead and skipped something simple i should have checked or would this also be everyone's 1st choice of the problem. I did check all wires and connections before ordering, as well as located the part in question which was the original Honda type that the one above replaces as an upgraded component. as usual any advice is greatly appreciated

The honda reg/rec are notorious for suicide, so you didn't jump the gun. The only other thing you should have done was to check to make sure the alternator is throwing out the proper voltage / make sure the wires haven't melted internally

from what I recall reading on here, a faulty reg/rec will boil the battery.

Did you check what voltage you're getting across the battery terminals at about 3500 rpm? If so what was the reading, should be in the 13-14.5 volts region.

Use the search facility, there are plenty of threads on this subject

Sure will , went through it a year and a half ago , boiled the begeezuz out of mine
ruined it infact, had to get another , a gel type type MotoBatt MBTX14AU , and one of
those Electrex UK R/R's (because imo they are the best and Shadow recommended
them at that time , the Motobatt was recommended by yours truly Kilgoretrout )
A winning combo if you ask me ......the battery and the R/R , only, that is ... lol

Remember guys, the reg/rec is actually 2 things! it regulates AND rectifies! It won't always cook your battery

If the regulator part fails, it will ( most probably) boil the battery, as it won't regulate the alt output. This usually leads to the alt putting out 20+ volts at 5-6k rpm (basically the volts keep rising with RPM) and cooks the battery, which then fails and ruins your day.

If the rectifier fails, then it just won't produce any current, and the battery will eventually go flat, and ruin your day (but the battery will most likely be fine)

Whenever you have a charging issue check volts across the battery at 3000+ rpm and then check the AC volts coming from the alternator. You just put the multimeter on AC volts and put the probes between any 2 of the 3 wires coming from the alt, this should read 30v or so between any 2 of the 3 wires (I think the wires are yellow coloured on the CBR)

Anything above 15vdc at the battery means the regulator has failed, if it stays close to 12 and you have ~30vac on the alt wires then you have a failed rectifier. if there's no vac on the alt wires then either the reg failed in such a way that it's not producing any field voltage or the windings inside the alt have melted. There's ways to check this but I haven;t had to yet, so I'm not exactly sure on the CBR (most likely you should be able to see 12vdc on the 'field' wire, one of the other wires going into the alt)

just an FYI the chinese people have started making a replacement for our part! Try it if you dare!

11.63 volts at the battery, i will check at the alternator at 1st light, the 11.63 volts is constant irregardless of the RPM

Yep, you're definitely not getting any juice. I'd check the AC at the alternator and go from there. If it's good at the alt, then all signs point to r/r or wiring in between.

edit:

a gel type type MotoBatt MBTX14AU
Just fyi... the motobatt is an AGM... not a gel.
Still one hell of a battery, tho, eh? Mine is still kicking *** and I'm hard on batts.

^^ Ha! I bet that is tedious. Hopefully the new r/r will solve your issues.

Chinese stuff is improving all the time, and at that price it might be good to have with you as a backup if your original fails on a longer run. I may buy one to test it..............
