i just wanted to see what you guys thought... when i bought my bike the prior owner must of had the battery vented wrong and it leaked on the swing arm.. ive sanded the bad area sevreal times and painted but it doesnt last long before it bleeds back.. im thinking about removing the swing arm and having it powder coated.. found a couple of places here in town.. need to go by when i get time for prices.. has anyone had this done?? shouldnt have to remove the bearing?? should be durable right?? If get it done ill post pics.. hopfully its not to expensive

 

the bleed back will probably just hurt the powder coat also.

 

Try using one of the proprietary brands of alkaline based paints (which may help to neutralise the acid) and then paint it. Otherwise, have it acid etched, and chromed.
Powder coating is hardened at 1500 degrees, and is a form of ceramic glazing, and the process should stop the acic continuing to etch the metal.
You could also immerse the whole swingarm in an alkaline solution for 24 hours or so. May work.
Take the bearings out whatever you do- they'll be ruined if you don't
I had a car bonnet that wouldn't take paint for the same reason-someone dropped brake fluid on it. Took many hours and much sanding. Perhaps a visit to your local specialist painter for advice is a good place to start....

 

Yeah I have the same problem, previous owner did the same stupid thing... so waiting for colder days to take it apart and see what can be done.

 

Too bad you dont live around here (Sweden,Eskilstuna) then i could have helped you paint it.
I have worked with powder coating for about 4-5 years....my brother still works there so he helps me when i want something powdered.
You should remove everything that's not metal otherwise it could melt...even bearings like shadow said.
Where i worked we hada sort of "primary paint" bath where the things went thrue (high voltage). It gets the primary paint in to every cavity/hollow therefore you also get rust protection even "inside" your things. I've powedercoated my Suzuki GSX1100 -81 frame with that primer, then glossy black on top of it.

 

Went down today and talked to a local guy powder coating guy said there min charge was 75 bucks.. which would cover the swing arm.. might have him do the centerand side stand in black also..dont know how much that 75 bucks includes.. but as for the swing arm im going to do it in what is called simi-chome.. should look pretty good with the polished rims.. so tomorrow ill be removing the swing arm and stripping it down in the blast cabinet at work.. asked the guy about the acid he said that they would treat it so it wouldnt bleed back.. plus its a 3 day turn around.. gotta get done soon befors springs in full swing ,weather is still off and on here ill post pics and keep you guys infomed

Remember powder coating chips easily- it's like a thin ceramic or shiny pottery shell, so be careful when refitting the swingarm - sharp bumps on it will chip the powdercoating, like banging the chain on it.......should look good ....post pics when you finish it.....pse.

 

Yup, that's the one Shadow....with black color and stripes in different blue shades.
