this amazing bike has stopped !
I'm new to this forum but after a quick search on the net I feel that I am among kindred spirits.
I love my 91 1000 F it has done all I ever asked of it and always had more left to give.
After a 5 day 4 country tour of Europe recently it only reinforced my faith in these wonderfully comfortable and quick machines.
Today though the old girl has stopped working.
Went for quick ride and she was running as normal then suddenly the engine dies.
It will not start on the starter ( no power to kill switch and starter circuit )
Checked fuses / battery is good have power to lights indicators ect.
Got out the circuit tester and it would seem that although there is power on the switched side of the ignition switch it is not getting much further down the line.
Should I be looking at the CDI unit now as the next component inthe line ?
Any ideas as to where to pinpoint the problem would be most welcome.
thanks .

Have you checked that your getting continuity THROUGH the kill switch when it's in the run position? Might just be a dodgy switch? Also check & clean all multi plugs and connectors. You might also try checking the wiring on the ignition circuit for chaffes which could be earthing out.......

thanks ,
checked the kill switch that seems fine.
I.m now thinking it may be the cluth lever diode which has died.
looking at the wiring diagram it seems to be the main suspect that would cut power to both the kill switch and the starter button at the same time.
will let you know tomorrow.

problem solved !
A big thanks to all those who put forward suggestions.
I tested the clutch lever diode and all is well.
Went back to basics and followed the ignition circuit through.
DOH !
A blown fuse on the ignition circuit ! (it pays to be thorough when checking and test both sides of a fuse !!!!! )
I replaced the fuse which blew again almost imeadiately.......AHHH ! now we are getting somewhere.
Found the short circuit in the right hand handlebar switch and HEY PRESTO !!
The red rocket lives again !
As a footnote it's easy to get fixed on one idea and be blind to the obvious !
