I bought a starter clutch, thinking it was the problem (and not knowing the difference between the starter clutch and the damper - live and learn) but in every case I've seen on here, it's never been the starter clutch - always the damper.

If you or anyone else ever needs a good starter clutch I have one going begging - postage only. Why is it always the most inaccessible parts that break down, eh ?

Man you've got that right. Guess it makes us good at at the tough stuff.
Of course it's no longer tough after the sixth time through it.

Well ended up replacing damper with a used one from salvage yard.
And all is well. Now cranks normally and starts quickly. Will check,
and adjust carb sync. tonight then on to other things.
My thanks to all. With out this forum I'd still be in the , WHATS WRONG
stage instead of the IT'S FIXED stage. Also if Stuconz happens
to read this, your write up with pic's was outstanding. Your video
got me headed down the right path instead of the many wrong one's
others, including shops have taken. Brakes, tires, then test ride
Time.

Take Care

He says he has had replaced the alternator/ Rec/ Reg and I have installed a new fully charged battery. When I finally got it started it runs great and
charging system works great. BUT that very strange noise and very slow
cranking when trying to start. Then I found this forum and STU'S video,
that's the exact noise and slow cranking I now know the problem is the
alternator damper. Only problem is now that it is out it seems to be ok.
Can not rotate the inner shaft just with my finger through the center as
suggested or when I place it back on the alternator shaft. It may rotate just
under a quarter inch then locks and will not rotate further.
I was guessing it would rotate a full 360 deg. with very little resistance.
Am I testing it correctly?
Is the quarter inch movement than locking normal function
or am I seeing a problem? Im a bit unsure to call it good because it is
exactly the same as the video.
Thanks for any suggestions

If you've read this thread so far and have a MkI bike (87-89) then the damper is no longer available from Honda.

i am investigating the MkII damper to see if it can be used instead.

If you have a MkII bike I suggest you buy a new damper now if you plan to keep the bike because as sure as sure can be they will discontinue it.

Partzilla.com - OEM Powersports Parts from Honda, Kawasaki Polaris, Suzuki and Yamaha at discounts up to 80% off MSRP are cheapest at the moment, but watch the postage
