Default 88 starter clutch question

Hello all, I just bought a 88 on ebay tonight so I figured I'd register up cause I'm sure I'll need a forum like this.

The bike I bought was diagnosed with a bad starter clutch. I am a GM mechanic, and I don't think I'll have any trouble doing the repair. I'm just wondering what all is involved, and if the clutch is sperate from the expensive starter.

Thanks for any help!

I've never messed with mine, but I saw it when I took my carbs off. So you should clean the carbs when you take them off. If the starter spins, but the engine doesn't, I think there's a chain drive that could be causing the problem. I like the Haynes manual a lot better than the Honda manual.

Hi. Welcome aboard.

Starter clutch driven gear is spun by the alternator drive chain ... which is deep down. Sounds like you have a yank the engine and split the case kind of job ahead of you. I've never been in there myself but FWIW an ex-Honda tech I'm chummy with on another forum has done the alternator drive chain tensioner swap before and said it was a real PITA.

I've heard of a local '88 1000f which needed a similar job that the owner was not willing to pay the shop labour for. I think they quoted him ~$1500 CDN to to the job. I guess that's what labour costs for some jobs when folks don't wrench for themselves ...

Good luck and please post updates (pics are a bonus!) with your progress.

I talked to a guy today who told me it attached to the clutch basket and I just had to pull the engine side cover to get to it [sm=smiley25.gif]

Edit: Pics here, my brother and dad are going to see it tomorrow. Drop off some money, then when I ride my old bike home from school, I'm going to pick it up and tear it apart.

Beautiful looking bike. But what if it isn't the starter? What if it's the starter solenoid or something simple? I wouldn't trust an unknown mechanic, and would check it myself carefully before I split the cases.

Sorry, but you have to split the cases and remove the crankshaft.

I have heard a rumour that you may be able to access the starter clutch from behind the clutch basket, but I have never seen a single post anywhere saying that somebody has actually managed to do it.

I have a service Manual you can download here:-

Good luck.

Well, I'll keep you all informed as to what I find wrong with it. I intend to check everything before ordering parts. If the case needs to be split, then I guess I'm splitting it.

Thanks for the service manual, I'm sure that will come in handy.

Edit: With a bad starter clutch I should be able to bump start it right?

I had in bad starter Clutch with the 1st CBR1000 I owned. Sometimes it would start fine (usually when hot) other times it would turn the motor for a few secs & die. I went through the whole list of stuff it could have been until a Honda Mechanic replaced the starter clutch in it and it ran fine.

But whenever it wouldn't start off the starter it always started fine with a push.
