I am in the market for a new bike and this bike is on my short list. What I want to know truth about it. I know and read alot of good things but alot of times there are a few things about the model or the year that was a problem/something to look for when buying. So please let me know what you think. Thank you very much for your help! Jason

Mark1 87/88 model - first of the breed. Good solid bike, owners love 'em
Mark 2 89-92 - Revised shape, better lines IMHO, eat cam chains and the occasional reg/rectifier
Mark 3 93-96 - Last of the line - Tailpiece and top fairing mods. See eat cam chains above.
Probably the best all around hypersports tourer ever built - at least we think so.....
Now, welcome to the Forum
Second, please fill in all the locaion bits on your avatar so we know where you're from, and don't have to look it up - it's tiresome.[:@]
Ask whatever you like, we'll try to help you, but if it's a crotch rocket or lightweight screamer you want, this is not the bike for you. They're heavy at around 250 Kgs (550 Lbs)

I have an 87 Hurricane and I love it. The seat is very comfortable on long day trips for you and your passanger. The handle bars are at a comfortable height and distance were your wrist and arms wont hurt. You can sit uppretty straightto help with back problems. Fast enough to keep up with any bike out there. I have takenheron the Tail of the Dragon several times and she can hang some curves. Every where you go people love to look at this bike. Bad things. A little viberation from the engine at higher rpms which tingle your hands. Gel grips and gloves can help with that. Check for rust on the swing arm and header pipe. Each can be sanded down and powdercoated. Make sure the battery stays fresh. If not the bike will not run. I change mine every two years and put a tender on it. Older bike takes just a little extra care. Would not have anything else.

Shadow1;So what your saying is that 87/88 are good but 89 and on have cam chain problems?

Bayarearider; Seller is looking for $1200. The other bike I am looking at is a 89 katana 1100.

Dragon64; Fast steering but can get hot. Thanx

bruiserc; Thank you!

Some things to me are importait and so are not. The reason I am looking at this bigger bike is I am going to be putting on a sidecar. So my 2 young boys, me and the ol' lady can jump on and go for a spin. Right now it is on a bike with not enough power and bad steering angle. So power/steering/over heating are the big things I am looking at. With the katana it looks like they made the motor for a long time and there plenty of parts out there for it, but I am not sure about the CBR.Are there parts out there like the katana or is it a slowly shrinking supply. Thanx for taking your time to help me out. Jason

I'm sure you just lost a few friends with the sidecar comment. but here ya go!

I believe the Katana is a de-tuned Gixxer of that era. May be air cooled.

You should go for a Ural (ARussian Boxer)w/ 2whl drive option.

an example- http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/mcy/817591900.html

Well I just got here. I hope I did not lose friends already. So what you are saying is that people here do not like the sidecar thing. I can understand people like going on the twistys. I love it too, That is why I have a bike for the track, one for the dirt, and one for solo cruzing. And know I what something for the whole family. Please do not let this effect your opinion.

As I edited may last post I wanted to know if the parts were still out there as it seems they are for the katana?

Urul/bmw's do nothave the power and are very uuuuuuuuuuuuuuugggggggggggllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyy!

Kidding.
I agree with the ural fugly comment.
If I could find a sidecar CBR like the pic, I'd ride it with pride.

CBR motor bits are readily avail. It's the body parts that's a challenge.

good luck!

No, they all eat cam chains at some point.
Good luck with the sidecar
Spares are plentiful, but you need to know where to look - fairing bits are the hardest to find
