'87 CBR1000-FH Issues... Exhaust covers? Cam Chain Rattles? Etc...
Hey there folks!
Recently purchased an 87 CBR1000 FH off Ebay to keep me on two wheels on the trip back and forth to work... just under 50,000 on the clock, 12 months MOT and 6 months road tax. Knowing that these motors are pretty bulletproof, I didn't have too many worries, especially as it was being used to commute quite long motorway distances...
There have been more than a few issues that have cropped up in the weeks since I rode her home - I wasn't expecting concourse condition on a 25 yr old bike, and I didn't pay very much - £500, so I was planning on treating this either as a hack to get to work on while my Busa was struggling back to life after a prolonged time off the road, or as a full-time commuter/everyday bike to restore back to semi-original condition and run alongside my poor old 1300R (when running again).
Sadly it looks like I will be getting rid of the Busa now. The guy who has been "fixing" it has now had it in his workshop for 10 months and cannot get her running properly, despite being a Hayabusa "specialist" apparently... A friend of a friend has made me an offer to take it away in its current non-running condition, so I think the "new" CBR is now going to be my only transport!
At least I can throw a fair wedge of cash at the CBR - which it's gonna need, I think.
First off, here's what she looks like right now...
As you can see, she's not gonna win any beauty contests - there's eveidence of a major fluid escape at some point all over the main stand, back of the engine and some of the currently unused fittings for the missing covers.
I've managed to find a couple of exhaust covers off ebay from an '87 SC21, but they don't seem to fit.
I'm not sure, but the silencers don't look quite right - certainly not the same as the library shots I've seen of this model....
Here's a close-up;
Does this look right?
Here are the covers;
The covers match up with the mounting holes on the frame, but come up way too short on both silencers' mounting holes???
The covers look right, based on what I can tell from various microfiches, but I suspect the silencers are off a different year perhaps?
I just thought it would look a bit neater with the covers re-fitted, but if it means a new exhaust then I'll just leave them off, or re-sell them...
My biggest concern is the tractor sound-alike cam chain rattle which doesn't seem to subside once the engine is warm. I'm hoping that a decent full service with some fresh oil will help with the noise, but I reckon it's gonna need a bit more than that to get it properly dealt with. I've seen one or two semi-complete engines knocking around for a few hundred pounds if it all does go pear shaped.
At least there's a lot of great advice and help here on this site - and I'm sure I'll be asking more than one question while I'm here!
Thanks for listening y'all!
Dave.

Welcome Dave
reason is the exhaust on it belongs to a MK2 89 - 91 1000F
You have the proper covers mate but the wrong exhaust
BTW
IMO she's in fair condition worth the effort in every way
The MK1 exhausts are thinner and have diff mount points
for the covers you got
check your valve cover & gasket for oil leaking
sounds like the cct and chain itself will need replacing eventually
a good winter project
Enjoy the Forum there's a good amount of UK based Guys
on here most days

If you're patient the end-cans come up fairly frequently on e-bay, then you can use them and fit your shrouds.
I prefer the look of the bike with shrouds fitted as well.
I'll keep an eye out for you if you like, more eyes on the job
Oh BTW welcome to the forum from a fellow UK owner, there's a few of us on here.

Welcome from the Sates.
I bought mine for $800.00 US. As long as it starts, runs, the headlight works when you jiggle the starter button, the chain slap goes away when it warms up and it's still fast enough to scare you. You have a fine bike, no matter what the mileage. Change the plugs and fluids. New chain and sprockets. Good rubber and you're good to go for the commute.
I would look into the leaks though, despite the fact that you Brits have built generations of bikes that leaked, let's not say "oil", but "tradition".

Try a good 20w 50 Synth oil to see if that helps, it can sometimes make a big difference.
Mobil1, Repsol or something along that line. Just make sure you do not use Auto oil that has
an energy star label on it.
