Its real easy. If you look at your front wheel the spedo drive gear is on the left side (if your sitting on the bike) it actually doubles as a wheel spacer. Their should be a cable coming out going direct to your gauges. The cable inserts directly into it and if I am remembering correctly it faces the back. If there is no cable you should see a hole. If there is no spedo drive gear you most likely have a newer front end, I think they moved the spedo in 89? Its a simple system with tabs and a drive gear. If you put the cable in and still no speed then you will need to take the wheel off and figure out whats damaged.

I would check the inner cable to see if it is broken before taking the wheel off. You should be able to pull the inner out an check it and they normally have a square on both ends.
Or undo the cable at the back of the speedo and the end close to the speedo drive unit on the front wheel then turn one end and check that the other end is turning.
Does that make any sense?

Sorry pmcg , I see what you mean!!! If he doesn't have a cable it will never work!! lol
My 87 has an inner and an outer cable from the front wheel to the speedo and as far as I know all have cables but the later are from the gear box output shaft or close by.
