thanks, I have not started to tear into her, but it will be soon, should I pull the motor or start by pulling the head?

Thanks for all the replies. I bought this bike to turn wrenches etc so its all good. Yes would rather ride of course but in the long run I will have a nice bike that runs great. again thanks and I will be posting daily I can assure you

I think start by buying a child's Play Nurse set and use the stethoscope to try and track down whether the sound is originating in the top or the bottom end.

Alternatively you could use a screwdriver pressed into your ear with the blade held against the top or bottom end.

This has now become quite important as there is Screech riding on the result.

Pull the pan to see what you have first. Head, motor or pan, the pipes have to come off. If it's the head the motor has to come out, same for lower end problems. Personally I would take a look down below to see what kind of monster I'm dealing with.

Rod knock echos in the cylinder and is hard to isolate.
