1990 1000f Spark issues
Hello like to introduce myself, im chris and have been riding "hurricanes" for 5 years now. I recently purchaed a 1990 cbr 1000f. I am having issues with spark.
I charged battery last night. Go in shop this morning and turn over testing spark (plug out that is grounder to frame) i got spark first three hits of the start button. After that it goes blank!!! tried again no spark. Wondering what could be the issue?

hi and welcome chris
electrical problems can be a pain, allways start with the easy first.
good battery (can take a fair bit to turn over and spark)
check all the connectors and earth points on the ignition side, coils ect to start (make sure you have a wiring diagram) some one else will be along with some more guidance as well

G'Day Chris,
Are the lights dimming when you try to start? Is the engine turning over at 'starting speed'?
Could be:
1. a collapsing cell in the battery (replace),
2. a dickey starter switch (clean or replace),
3. a dickey ignition lock (try spraying a little WD-40 or similar in the slot or pull apart and clean),
4. coil problems (replace coil packs with stick coils)
5. bad earths between the igniter and the coils (trace and clean all earth points)
6. dickey R/R (replace).............
Really we need a few more symptoms.
Cheers, SB

* A "dry" lube (such as Jigaloo or Blaster)
* Electronic cleaner
WD is "wet" and tends to gather and pull dirt (and such) into places you didn't intend.

Are both coil pairs loosing spark, 1/4, 2/3? If both sides are effected the problem is upstream of the coils as it's not likely to loose both coils and spark triggers at the same time. If starter cranking speed is normal, indicating a strong/charged battery(measure battery volts while cranking) stay on the ignition side of the equation. If battery falls off quickly and a low voltage is supplied to coils, look on the battery side, as the guys mentioned-battery, grounds, connections.

Probably correct. Electronics are as electronics do but I'd go for sticking a new battery in first. These bikes are very susceptible to poor starting if the battery is not top notch.
Have you tried jumping from a car battery (without the engine running) to see if the symptoms remain unchanged with the extra kick?
If your battery is OK then it should be turning over fast even with the plugs in. Failing starter motors are not common.

Batteries are like women; they may look good on the outside, but they can have some internal stuff going on that will eventually drive you to drink.
